Custom/ aftermarket stocks and fore ends?
« on: January 30, 2013, 07:00:04 PM »
Quick question for y'all.  I'm currently debating how badly I need an H&R chambered for either 45/70 or .500 Smith.  I'd be more tempted if I could find some nicer stock options.  I was wondering if y'all may have any suggestions?  The ones at Boyds currently don't do much for me.

Thanks!

Boyd's has them also, but I cannot say I really like their new website.

Gunstocks inc. is he exact place I was trying to remember.  Lots of nice choices there.  I'm thinking the 45/70 with the straight grip stock and Mannlicher fore end would be a really sweet cast bullet lead flinger.

Unfortunately, I agree with y'all concerning Boyds.  Their website is just...nowhere near as nice as it was.

Thanks for your thoughts!

My son and I will make a custom gunstock set ( stock and forearm ) for you as per your specs, will trade for barrels, recievers, scopes, reloading presses and or other reloading equipment, we'll even trade for cash ! Heres a link to other members showing the stocks they traded us for, and a second link to a post on how we made 'em! Heres my latest finished stock, Boyds is'nt the only ones to have lefthanded thumbhole stocks! Mine is made by hand, not a copier.

Has anyone purchased a forearm from gunstocks with the intentions to somewhat match the h&r laminate thumbhole stock?  I was planning on calling them for a target varmint forend, but didn't really want to up the money for forend & stock for matching wood.

Kawie, sent you a PM.
My son and I are working on a ventelated beavertail fore end, gonna be a bit spendy, as we figure that it will need 8 passes of the router to get it done, and then theres the worry of snaping off the barrel fore end lug with that much wood on it. It will need a 1 1/4" cap screw to attach it. On my own rifle ( a 25-06 ) when I made the beavertail for it, I JB welded the fore arm lug in place, packed JB Weld in under the barrel lug. Still holding.

I like Boyd's.
That piece of burl used for Tom's stock has nice figure to it.

It would have been shaped like a Boyd's stock, if Tom had asked it to be, but he did'nt, he wanted something to fit his hand. Beautifull as it is.   :)  That piece of burl was almost dense enough to have made a thumbhole stock, but with burl you gamble cuttting into it, you can find a void anywhere.  :o

Your stocks are beautiful... I didn't mean to sound otherwise (I went back and changed the post). I wish I had the skills to make something like that.
Have you done any straight grip stocks in the burl? I'd be interested in a straight grip stock and schnabel forearm for my 45LC Handi. Please let me know...
Thanks very much.
