Obama wants to shut down the air defense systems for the south. Maybe this is payback to the South for voting against him.
Some have take this story along with his looking for military leaders who will fire on US citizens, and coming to the conclusion that Civil War 2 is on its way. Nationwide tyranny.

Our southern border is, in part, protected by the Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS), which utilizes moored balloons hovering at about 15,000 feet to identify low flying aircraft and missiles that may penetrate the border and cross into U.S. airspace.
According to Exelis Systems Corporation, the company that built and jointly maintains TARS with the U.S. Air Force, the

government has ordered a complete shutdown of Aerostat flight operations:
 

The government also indicated its intent that aerostat flight operations will cease on March 15, 2013, and that the remainder of the fiscal year will be used to deflate aerostats, disposition equipment, and prepare sites for permanent closure. We are currently reviewing all the details of the RfP and evaluating the possible impacts on the program and our workforce. We continue to communicate with the government on this matter, and we will have more information in the coming days and weeks.

An Exelis employee close to the TARS project had this to say about the closure of the sites:
 

“Not only will this closure mean hundreds of people will be out of jobs, but it also means our borders will not be safe, especially along the remote U.S. Mexico Border like in Texas.
These defense radars detect low flying aircraft infiltrating our borders.
Without these defense radars, low flying aircraft will go undetected.
It will be open season for any drug/gun/slave smugglers, terrorists flying in with nukes, low altitude missiles, or even a full scale low elevation invasion/attack against America.”

I would guess that Aviation Week magazine will have something on this which may give some more detail to what is behind this. Checked the site and nothing posted yet. I know that some years back their was an article in Aviation Week talking about how many problems there was with this system and how ineffective it was. It may or may not have been improved since then or maybe it is just a white elephant that needs to be cut. We will see.

I don't know if those blimps are any good, but it's very clear that our government doesn't care much about the folks who live along our southern border.  I think the most cost effective thing the guvmint could do is to put a bounty on illegal invaders--them and the horses, planes, boats, vehicles, etc. that they ride in on.  And it shouldn't matter what shape the offenders are in when the bounty is applied for.

Not to rain on the Yomma bashing but it's about time they got rid of this program. It never worked right anyway and was a major waste of tax payer money. If you're assuming that these blimps were in the air 24/7, you'd be wrong. Some were only flying 4 hours a day, some never left the ground. The crews manning these units were not on site but had to be transported. Some of these units were hours from base camp. About the only good it did was in the Big Ben area where they did manage to slow down the low flying drug dealer air traffic. But a good pilot knowing where the units were and when they would be flying could evade these things easily. It's not rocket science to determine if a radar unit is working or not. We still have normal radar units running on the border so there's nothing that's really changed other than the monies screwed off on this joke will be screwed off somewheres else. Unless they extract the black helicopter units that are patrolling the border, there's not much chance of low altitude missiles getting in or a flight of "enemy?"aircraft.

i've always believed we should use the border as a training area for training snipers of the military and LE...


i'm astounded at the attitude of our "Leaders" when it comes to protecting our sovereign borders...i know of NO one, or any organizations or political parties that are opposed to having our borders open to LEGAL crossings.


but then again, i've noticed that since the liberals, errrrrrrrrrr. "Progressives" are more prominent now, the word "ILLEGAL" is NOT used in conjunction with those who cross our borders illegally; they're referred to as "undocumented"...or just "Immigrants". if they don't agree with something, they convienetly 'forget' or change the meaning to suit their need or agenda
