Well it's over
« on: January 31, 2013, 01:25:55 PM »
It's official, deer season is over in Alabama. This has been by far my worst for seeing deer. I only got 1 this year, and never once saw a doe while I was hunting. That is a first in 18 years.

I hope yall had a good season.

Looking forward to October already.

Same here. Went today just to confirm that it was horrible.
I figured up all my time deer hunting; about 140 hours. One doe. Usually get 4 a year with less days in the woods.
Know some folks who didn't get anything.
Also, we never really had any cold weather.

Got invited to a "deer country club" during bow season. The manager told us they didn't have the deer that they've had in years past.

On the other hand, invited a friend. He was late. got on the stand at 3:30, shot a doe at 4:05.
He texted me that he got another one tonight.

Everyone I've talked to said they were ready for it to be over.

The season extension will mean that they whatever they extend it, it will be shut down in mid-December for the same number of days. SW Ala only.

Going quail hunting Monday.

Over here in southeast Mississippi we have a couple more weeks to go.  I also have not had a good season.  Haven't seen a decent buck at all since bow season.  Last year killed three including a nice buck.  It's bucks only starting tomorrow and only with "primitive" weapons.  (I don't know why my scope-sighted CVA .44 magnum single shot is primitive but my peep-sighted Marlin 1894C .357 magnum is not - except that's how the law is written.)

I was glad to see January and the end of deer season arrive. It wasnt a bad year, not a great year by any means. We put 6 in the freezer between my son and I, I got 2 bucks and 2 does, he got 2 really nice does. So meat supply is probably ok til next season. I only saw one decent buck while hunting and no shot on him. Weather really messed us up around here. On an aside, I heard today that the Legislature is considering a bill that will allow hunters  to hunt with a regular rifle during the PW season on private lands. Apparently the MDWFP thinks we are not killing enough deer in MS. I hope it passes. Might hurt H&R sales alot though.

Hey, rugerfan64.  No doubt what state you're from, is there?  But exactly where in the Magnolia State are you?  I'm down here in the northwest corner of the old West Florida part (Pearl River County).

Deer have been scarce in my area of Ga. for the last three years, and it seems to be worsening.  I've found several coyote kills.....

What's going on guys?  I'm not a deer hunter, but some friends are & they also had a bad season here in N. Alabama.  I don't think I saw but 2 & they were Does in my back yard munching on the remains of my small Pea Patch.

Part of my problem was that a good portion of the farm I hunt, and adjoining properties, had been clear cut because of pine beetles.   :(  Deer movement may have changed so the stand sites weren't as well positioned as before.  But I hunt the bottoms that aren't timbered over so that shouldn't have accounted for my feeders only drawing turkeys, coons and squirrels!   ::)

And, by everything I saw on other the trail cams, the deer just weren't there in the numbers we have always had.  I blame allot on coyotes, but I dunno for sure...  :-\

Worst season for me in 30 years, I didn't get a deer. I usually get 3 or 4 a year without hunting very hard. this year it was too dry to get our food plots  growing before the season, it was hot, then when it started raining it wouldn't stop. Now the plots look great but the season is over. We did need the rain though, we had one pond that was so low that we used a dip net to rescue the fish and put them in another pond before the herons ate all of them.

South Alabama was pretty good......
