Scoping the AK
« on: February 01, 2013, 12:52:33 PM »
Just wondered if some of you folks have scoped your AK and what mount you found to be easy to install yet held zero. Also wouldn't mind knowing what scopes you like to use with your rifle.

I'm planning to use the AK with 5rd 7.62x39 mags for close range deer hunting this fall and for feral hogs possibly as well.
I just like the rifle, a thumbhole post ban norinco mac 90. It feels good and is fast on target. Very reliable. Figured i'd try sellers and bellot 123gr soft points, maybe the remington core locs if I can find some. Any thoughts?  J

Hi JohnnyReb:

Take a GOOD Look at TWS. Texas Weapons Systems replacement Rail for AK47's. It is very, very well built, easy to install, retains zero, and you can add peep sights, Scopes, Lasers and more to the full picatinny rail.

You can check them out on my website at www.huntershut1.com I am also the East Coast Dealer for these systems. TWS makes one to fit almost ANY Ak47.

Thanks Jim, TWS seemed to be the name coming up over and over as I did searches on this subject, most of the othe MANY designs and models seemed hit or miss in their reviews and I only wanna scope it out once.  thanks for the reply, I'm gonna check out your site.  J

Edit, checked it out, very nice setup with quality gear and good prices. Glad to find you. Which of your variations fit the 95' norinco Mac 90?   Thanks!  Jeff

Checked out the TWS mount as well as every other mount I think that's ever been made. All seem to have their drawbacks and some have more than others. After studying all the options, I see why the russians  either used open sights or side mounts. I believe i'll go their route and have a gunsmith install side mount brackets for a detachable mount. Cost will run about the same as the high end top mounts but will allow for factory sights.  J

Hi Jeff:

Depends what you are looking for. You can still have Factory sights with the TWS mount. There is a leaf sight option that goes on the front of the rail that gives you the factory setup. If you want to see the development of the TWS system check out the AR15.com  there is about 95 pages of the development of the rail.

I also sell stock AK's with the side scope rail all ready mounted from the factory. They are no box of chocolates either...LOL

Thanks for the reply Jim, I like your site, if you took paypal I 'd have already broken at a weak moment or two :D

I've gone back and forth since I started this thread, almost ordering a TWS, almost ordering one of its close competition, almost just getting the sampson rail.. in the end I hesitate and change my mind. I read in a couple places that the TWS rail doesn't work well on a mak 90? Knowing it does would remove that particular doubt, i'd probably order one if I knew it would work. I do realize however, that there's no "exacts" with AK style rifles, I really won't know till I tried to bolt it up.  J

Edit:  ended up ordering a samson rail. It seemed to be the only mount without any complaints of it not fitting, and is fine for a redot, which is all I'm going to mount up for now. I'll post thoughts on the samson once I get it.  J
