Looks good Grandson..I saw the pic on your Dad's I-phone which you sent him.  Being as you probably tuned everything like you do, it will likely shoot the proverbial "gnat off a hog's back"..and put mortal fear into 'chucks and 'yotes at long yards!

Here in the "People's Republik of New Yawk", folks can only dream of such guns anymore..   Comrade Cuomo has seen to that!
They say he has his eye on the presidency, but remember folks... " Friends don't let friends vote for a CUOMONIST !!"

I agree. Sniping has the connotation of shooting at people.  In reality a "Sniper" was the term given to one who was very good at shooting Snipe. Snipe are very small, wary birds and very difficult to shoot. So a Sniper is very good at shooting BIRDS.

Well gus here is the first 100 yrd group with the new build..... Its shoots great!..... I found it really likes the 77 gr Sierra Match King ( I took 3-4 different loads from 35-77gr).. The first shot hapened to be a perfect bullseye and that was my flyer (seasoning the barrel,,,,LOL) All the other 4, of the 5 shot group were under a DIME!!! The group measured .599" pretty good for a semi auto AR........

With all the DPMS parts you just as well refer to it as an LRT since that's what DPMS refers to them as. I refer to my long range ARs as varmint guns since I can't imagine even trying one for anything else.  I really don't care what you call it since I don't play that PC crap anyway.  Now, if you want to bring that thing to its full potential, modify some mags and your upper to feed longer rounds.  Being restricted to mag length rounds is a real detriment to both velocity and accuracy even with the 77gr. Sierra.

Half inch groups at 100 yds are a great thing but they don't necessarily mean what some might think at say 5 to 600 yds. or longer.  When you stretch the range a bit the velocity increase you are able to obtain with bullets like the Sierra 77 match due to increased powder capacity become almost critical.  The modifications are a pain and you end up with a gun that is very tedious to shoot and load for but if long range with a semiauto small bore is your goal that is the price you pay.  What you have there should be very reliable and accurate just as it is and I'm not knocking it but with the above modifications you can see as much as a 200 fps increase which really shows up at longer ranges.  It's a lot of work for a little return so be proud of what you have.  Shoot some groups at range and see how you group.  After all, you put this thing together for long range not 100 yds.   ;)

I dont really have this ole boy to shoot 500 yards plus dont really have anywhere to shoot that distance to try, beside i have a 243 that i would use to stretch out to farthur distances. this one is just a fun shooting semi auto that i would use to 200 - 300 yrds  tops.... Wasnt really trying to get a benchrest gun.....

  Ironglowjr;
I believe the same basic rifle you used over such ranges in Al Anbar..such places as Ramadi & Fallujah..must have outshot the enemy who tested you at those ranges. ... And that's a bit more pressure than shooting a coyote, right?  ;) :D
       Proof ?     Well  ..you're here today..praise God!

better  believe it..... and not to mention sweat dripping in your eyes, and all the sand under your clothes acting like sand paper. also have shot at 500 yrds with iron sights and got all 10 shots in 6-10 size group with stock rifle and stock ammo.... i have no quarries with this one shooting much better..... keeping in mind this is all stock stuff on it for the most part. the trigger is still a mil spec  trigger but high polished. so .5 moa is not bad......but a two stage is on the horizon.    I just have to say I love my 2nd amendment right as well as the tools that go with it...

I started Ironglowjr  with a Marlin 25N..in .22 LR, hen he was just a sprout.  He sharpened his eye on woodchucks and went from there.  Obviously, picking a woodchuck out from foilage has a good application for picking the enemy out from foilage or even an urban landscape.  He is a fine gunsmith and truly loves his craft..

Frankly; (IMO)  the .223 is best in the 200-400 range; if I were putting together a rifle for longer ranges, it would be more prudent to use something more in the nature of 30/06, .308, .270 or .300 WM...or even .22-250

yes, the use of a higher powder capacity cartridge is best for longer range. The use of 77gr bullets is to make better use of the rifles already in service.  I think we all would prefer an M110 but we can buy 2 ARs for the price. Also the ammunition is more expensive.

If I win a lottery I will have an M110, until then, 77gr in my AR15 will do just fine.

I don't know of any honest to God real live sniper who would choose the 5.56 on an AR platform or any other for the job he is trained to do.  The idea behind those of us who have built such guns is merely experimentation.  I have 22-250 (my favorite small bore) along with 220 swift and others.  I've had in years past a 30-224 that would push a 55 grain pill to just over 5000 fps for a few rounds before you needed a barrel change.  Most folks who use the real M4 chose to limit effective range to 300 yards or less even though they know they are capable of hits to 600 meters or more.  The long tight twist barrels MOE buttstocks, high powered optics and the like don't fit in well with the military use of such a platform, but how do we know what they are capable of if we don't try?  Anyone but me remember Cobb Industries who chambered everything imaginable on an AR platform?  Sell sort of an AR platform with a 2 piece lower.

Ironglowjr won't tell you, but I will...
He did serve as an honest-to-goodness sniper..and he built his own AR to do it with.
There are snipers and snipers..  Some are for the long range work (800+ yards)..for which ironglowjr reccommends the MacMillian 50 caliber.  He was one of 2 in his unit, designated for that work..his work was primarily in the urban areas of AR Ramadi and Fallujah and other towns in Al Anbar prov.  Most ranges likely being 100-300 yards.. printing as his target above shows  above will do the job in 5.56.
He has much experience in building ARs as well as all other types of guns.  His present job requires he smith on everything from combat rifles right up through the .50 cals...including the gattlings.  So, I do put great stock in his gunsmithing and marksmanship.
He has been proven under fire..

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I realize that, but his is of recent and up-close-and-personal experience..and again, he is not alone.  I have met many of his friends and have decided that weuntil very recently had perhaps the best trained, best conditioned and most professional military we have ever fielded.
Unfortunately; with the recent "social engineering"  that has gone on  (sissyfying, political correctness, Washington turning on the troops, openly gays invited in etc, ....some of their very best are leaving.
IG jr was a Spec Ops Marine..and left, I am personally acquainted with 2 other elite type troops..one a Marine with the bomb detection dogs ..the other an Army Ranger in the " First Ranger Bn"..the original, historical unit..    They are both "hanging it up'..
Yes IG jr..Tim is now out and attending UB..and  Devin will be leaving the Rangers as soon as this hitch is done..in a couple months..
What a shame for the military to lose so many highly and expensively trained troops..  again these three are not alone.....

I apologize for any boasting..but yes, I am proud of him..and of the other two I mentioned... whom I saw grow from little boys..attending Sunday School right in our little country church..

I am quite proud of our fighting troops...however, the quality really goes down hill as we reach some of the highest ranks and the C-in-Chief.. ;) ;D
