quiet pest control?
« on: February 16, 2004, 02:06:33 PM »
Looking for an accurate plinking pest round that is super quiet out of my 1-15" 22 lr 14" contender. I shoot remington sub sonics now and would like a quieter round that is still accurate. I was looking at the cci target short. Range would be out to 50 yards. I've tried the super colibri, they worked fine out to 20 yards or so, not to sure they could kill a crow or squirrel at that range. Thanks

I wonder if use of a firearm with a longer barrel won't reduce the noise level.[e.g.22CB Long isn't real quiet in a revolver,it is noticeably quieter in a rifle].Personnally a 600fps .177cal. air pistol or rifle fired CB Long rounds won't instantly kill lawn feeding muskrats at 30 yards.Would a bigger bore i.e.centerfire at ~500fps do the job?[albeit with a loopy trajectory at 50 yards].

Longer barrel is the key to quiet

The best I've ever used is an old Savage/Anschutz target rifle with a 26" barrel.  I used CCI CB Longs, and they shot very well.  I never tried them any further than about 25 yds. but they were quiet enough with that long barrel to hear the firing pin hit the case.  I filed a flat on the point of the bullet like an SGB and it hit pretty hard on starling sized targets.

what kind of pest?

I was playing around with my 410 loader and had an idea. I loader a shell like normal but in place of the shot I filled the case with chili powder.

I took it out side and fired it at my grill at about 10 feet away. I could hardly hear the shell go off it was more of a poof instead of a bang.

I got a nice crowed of pepper out to the 10 feet and could smell it out to about 15-20 feet.

If you are trying to get rid of cats or dogs this would work great

GOTTA try that pepper load in 12 ga......:-D

You are not going to kill much with CB cap type rounds at 50 yds in my experience. squirrels maybe but anything larger it will probably just make it mad. I have shot many coons with them and it wuually only makes em mad enough to come down and fight with the dogs. In a real cold winter when the fat is on thick they wont even get through the fat. For groundhogs and possums you will still have to be less than 20 yards to have any great effect without multiple shots at a now running target.
For larger vermin you would probably be better off loading something like 38 special or 357 mag with the heaviest lead only bullet you can get over just enough fast burning powder to keep it from sticking in the barrel.
These can be very silent loads and pack a real wallop out to about 50 yards and are suprisingly accurate.
Do you reload ??

I have shot a number of tree squirrels with CCI .22lr Stingers at 50 yards and had them crawl off.  You shoot at one of them with a CB cap at 50 yards and he may die but it won't be from the bullet.  Laughing yes but not from the bullet.

Bugflipper,

I take it that the problem is neighbors?  This is why you need quiet.  One other thing I have found when neighbors are thrown in the mix is the problem of dead birds dropping into their gardens, pools, etc. - tends to get them upset over this.   crow at 50 yards can and does take a lot of killing.  If it was me I would get a longer barreled .22 and go with the target .22 loads(and get closer to the crows and squirrels).  Lawdog

Believe it or not when I was 18 I  actually killed a large goose at about 200 yards with a single shot from a 22 cee bee out of my marlin 25 m.
I was just trying to scare it away aimed about 3 feet over its head the bullet hit right where the wing meats the body it flopped around a little then died

Yup... Law dog...I agree. I should have worded that a little better maybe :)
One other thing I have noticed about the CB type loads is they like to bounce off of things like trees and locust fence posts.

I don,t know if you can get Eley sub sonics overthere, but they are quieter than Rems and more reliable,I use them all the time in my 77/22 and my son Anchutze carbine, in the UK we have the advantage of having silencers on our guns, which is great for rabbits and squirrels.

Don't know if you have solved your problem but I used a 22 short sub sonic.
It's only good out to 20yards(what i was killing was only 10 yards away)
Was out of a rifle with a 20" barrel only thing heard was the fireing pin hitting the case.

I like Eley match shorts. Cutting the bullet from the nose to the case with a razor blade and spreading the "wings" some will make it open more when it hits. And you can hear the firing pin.  If it's a cat that's giving you a headache, try Tylenol. For you or the cat.

I like the CCI CB Shorts. Are quiet enough to be shot indoors.

Max range for a cat is 20yds, shot placement is everything so you may need a decent scope and re-sight for a particular yardage. These bullets do bounce around when contact with the ground, fence, etc.

I too shoot CB caps.  They have the trajectory of a John Stockton freethrow (a .300 winmag has the trajectory of a Shaq freethrow).  They are quieter than some airguns and have better energy out to 20 yards or so.  They are deadly on squirrels or crows but you'll have to be careful with your shot selection on anything bigger.
