I "read" that folks are already seeing the ammo, so i'm "hopeing" the guns won't be far behind.  Savage is said to have a rifle out soon...

I am beginning to take note of the 17 caliber guns.  :o several guys on here talk about the accuracy & killing power but I've always ben happy with the 22lr hv round & the 22 mag.
However my friend has one here on the ranch. His is the 17HMR and he used it a couple weeks ago to kill 3 hogs we had trapped. It worked perfectly.  ;)  So maybe I need to look into one of these.

However with Winchesters track record of bringing out duds and then discontinuing them I'm pretty sure I'll stick with the 17HRM.

I think i'm going to buy one, but then again i also have a Remingtom 5mm mag. too...  lol

I bought my first 17 in the 70's, used it for fun and then quite a bit when i was hired to clean out some pack of dogs...  I wasn't all that impressed with the 17 Rem. once you started using it on bigger animals, so if i buy a 17 WM, it will be for fun and pest control!

I live in prairie dog country and shoot them all year long. I like low muzzle blast low recoil rifles and would use a Win 17 Super Mag rifle ,that is if  the ammo is accurate  and an accurate rifle is chambered for the round. There is no point trying to take a 225 yard shot with a rifle shooting one inch or larger five shot 100 yard groups.

Many states do not allow rim fire rifles to be used on anything but small game.

The .17 Win Super Mag to me duplicates the .17 Hornet.  I read an article on this cartridge and they used the same Nikon Coyote scope that I have on my .17 Hornet.  This scope is calibrated for the .223, and the .17 Hornet has the same trajectory as the .223.  Now it seems the .17 Winchester Super Mag has the same trajectory.  So they brought out a cartridge that duplicates an already existing cartridge.  Why?  At least you can reload the .17 Hornet.

Not everyone likes to reload.  ;) for me it is just a matter of cost. If I can save enough then I'll reload if not I don't. Actually I'd rather  not as I have plenty of things to occupy my time other than reloading.

I agree and if you're going to go to the Hornet for centerfire benefits, why not jump three one-hundredths and go with the 204 and get a heck of a lot more performance...

Once i started shooting/reloading the Rem. .222, i couldn't get rid of my hornets fast enough!

I also like the fact that i won't have to reload the new 17...  I do wish they had went 20 cal. though.

Okay...well, I've got a very accurate 17HMR.....no over kill with this rifle for sure....should I expect more from the new super mag?

Performance wise, yeah it's a pretty significant step up from the HMR. If I were going to go with a rimfire, I would definately go with the Super Mag, after a few real life reviews on it anyway... Can't really trust the guys who get them for free and are asked how to give their review of them. I've bought 2 new rifle calibers when they were out just a couple months, the 204 and the 300 RUM, both of which I really like a lot. Both of which a lot of the old timers said would go the way fo the dodo and both of which are extremely popular rounds to this day.

IF they get a bullet in it that's "designed" for it's velocity, it's going to be one he!! of a "rimfire"!

Many areas do not allow center-fire rifles for any purpose. I live in such a Special Regulations area and I can not wait to try on the 17 WSM.

You might want to wait till they come out with a heavy barrel version of the rifle or other makers come out with different rifles. From reports that I have seen, the Savage rifle can in some instances shoot less than 1" groups at 100 yards but I've seen where they have had to be tweaked to give this accuracy. Savage is saying 1.5" is good enough for this rifle at 100 yards. Not too conducive to accuracy at 200 yards to be able to use its velocity advantage over the 17 HMR. Most 17 HMR rifles I have shot will easily beat 1" groups straight out of the box. The Winchester singleshot rifle in the 17 WSM seems to shoot really well and MGM is making barrels for it for the Encore and Contender carbines (an maybe pistol barrels too).
The savage rifle that I saw had a pencil barrel and seemed to be cheaply made for $325 with so-so accuracy.
God created man, Col. Colt made him equal.
