New NEF
« on: February 02, 2013, 10:05:42 AM »
I recently bought a NEF made in 1996 that has an assortment of barrels one being a 45 70/45 120. The fellow I got it from said it was worked on by a professional smith and I can shoot both 45 70 and 45 120 from that same barrel. After looking into it I seem to have founds two camps on that opinion. Just wondering if there is anyone on here that regularly shoots both cartridges from the same barrel and how it works out in the long term. I`m not too interested in the 45 120 end of things, I don`t reload and the economics are not kind :)  Thanks......

Not a good idea to shoot 45-70 in a 45-120.

Hey Jason, i know this has been discussed before. And i can see with the taper of the shell a problem arising. but the dumb question is has anyone one this forum actually tried it? is the .45-120 tapered also or is it truly straight walled? if straight, couldn't the 70 be blown out straight and then work like the 38 special in a 357 Max? i know , dumb idea.

They both have same case head and mouth diameters. It would over expand the mouth on 45-70 brass and be a long jump to rifling sort of like the 45-410 barrel.

yeah, 45/120 can be very pricey.

but perhaps this is the incentive you need to start reloading

you can reload the 45/120 quite easily and downloaded into a gentle shooter with little extra effort.

but if you decide to sell, for sure look at replacing it with a 45/70 barrel.  You won't be disappointed.

you may even get to trade it across.

Where are you looking at it?

I know you can shoot 45-70 from a 45-90 but anything longer like 45-110 or 45-120 is not
recommended.

You can make 45-70 equivalent loads in the 45-120 cases, and a box of 20 cases will likely last you 'forever'. With lower pressure loads you dont even need a dieset. You can sit and simple reload those just like the old buff hunters.
I would not be surprised if somebody here wouldnt be glad to swap you a 45-70 for a 120, though. If that notion suits you put it on the WTT Classifieds.

I put the 45 120 barrel up for sale on the classifieds and it went pretty quick. I`ve never heard of simple reloading without needing a dieset. Are there any books on the subject?
I would be more inclined to reload with all the equipment but I live on a sailboat and the less I have the better.

Im sure you can 'google' up u-tube videos of just such, but,
A long decapping punch and small hammer (old ice pick or long nail, grind the tip to fit the primer flash hole), a block with a hole to set the case and knock the primer out, a capping tool, a scoop of the appropriate size for the weight of powder you choose, and a supply of bullets. If you use low pressure loads the case wont need full length resizing and if you cast bullets the as cast dia. often fits right in the fully fire-formed case neck. Some homemade soft lube or Lee Liquid ALOX and you go shooting.
