Ewwww !
« on: February 02, 2013, 05:20:10 PM »
There is a huge bat outside on my porch ! A bat no kidding . I threw a rock at it and it hissed
at me . It has big teeth and is hanging upside down and my dogs are going nuts .
How do you shew away a bat ? Don't they usually run with friends or something ?
I thought they hibernated in the winter months but this one darn sure isn't . Yuck, they are some
ugly looking critters with a real bad attitude . Any suggestions ?

Watch those bats Anna. When an animal starts doing things out of its nature it can be a sign of rabies.
Examples---animals that are typically nocturnal which start being seen wandering around during the day.
Anywho---just a thought. I guess it is going to be a paranoid morning.  ::)

My first thoughts too William..   When an animal starts acting contrary to it's nature, be careful.. A coon at your glass gliding door at lunchtime, a fox in your garage at 3:00 PM..ignoring the dogs..
Hope your dogs have their shots up to date..otherwise, watch them closely..

Bats don't really like light...and will flee from it....the stuff of folklore, too. Shining a spot light on them or brightly lighting and area and they will leave.
.
Bats consume huge amounts of pesty insects....very beneficial. One reason to set up Bat Houses.

I have Bats every year that roost around my back porch light.  They have a feast on the bugs that are attracted to the light.  Haven't had a rabid bat yet.  The light does not keep them from their feast.  The
Bats and  the Swallows love my porch.

Bats are very benefical to have around. The amount of bugs they eat is amazing. Sometimes they show up in odd places like a porch. They will hiss and bare their teeth when disturbed.
Really not that big of deal. They do look a tad medevil.

I too share a hatred of bats.  I have dispatched many in my life, at distances of up to 25 feet or so, using an old Sheridan 5mm air rifle.  These are very quiet guns, and that 5mm pellet goes straight through them..  They will drop like a rock.  (At my parents old house, I killed three bats like this in one day, who had gotten into the attic through a tear in the screen covering the end ridge vent.)

I would put my dog in the house, shoot the bat, and then spray it down with a squirt bottle of Clorox bleach, until it is soaked wet.   Clorox kills the rabies virus.

Wearing rubber gloves, I would shovel it into a doubled contractor's plastic bag, tie it shut, and put it in the trash.  Be sure to then pour bleach on both sides of the shovel.

You have to throw it in the trash, because if you bury it, your dog will dig it up.

  Hope  this helps.

I believe you....you got some pet bats?...Generally Bats are nocturnal and negative phototropic...Key is bright or spot like lights..usually they go...this is the standard way to get them out of attics

I just have a 60 W bulb in my fixture.  Bats are great skeeter killers here.  With West Nile cropping up, I'll take the bats ( just hate the droppings they leave me).

It was up in a corner of the porch any gunfire would have damaged the house also. Your right Will
I called the Sheriff this morning and he said that was strange behavure . It's been warm here and
we have had moths , but the Deputy who came out said what really threw off an alarm was that it
was alone . We have caves around here and he said it was most likely a cave bat they can get fairly
large. Ewww is right, gross is gross and this thing had to have had mange. Local bats have fur and
they take off at the sight of a human so I bet your right it was rabid also. But mange can make an
animal go crazy also I saw where the Sheriff had to put down a coyote because of that .

The local Hispanics say that's where that Chupacabra story's come from. It is a coyote or a wolf who
has mange. After having that for awhile it causes deformitys and rabies type symptoms after loseing
all its hair. The animal also starts to lose its teeth so that's where the vampire thing comes from it
can only drink blood to survive. The sheriff told me that's why this thing was so ugly and had became
aggressive like it had. Bats are a protected species and like with cougers you can protect yourself
but you had better have a good reason to kill it . They put out traps because they said it wouldn't
go far. They checked my barn and my attic didn't find anything but they said they wanted to catch it
alive if at all possible to inspect it . Rabies and mange can go through a bat colony real fast and they
want to be able to stop it .

But a bat colony usually will reject a sick bat on their own so that would make sense for it being alone.
But none of this makes up for it being so fuggly ! Ewwww, I'm still a girl and things like this freak me
out. I'm just glad one of my dogs didn't get ahold of it, the Sheriff would have had to take the dog
In also . It's just more of country living at its finest !  ::)   Eeeee Haaa how's that ?

5mm is the only way to go . I have a beeman but I was afraid my dogs would get it if I dropped it.
My Dobie can jump six feet in the air so he was my main concern. And yes i pack a pistol around
here it is one of those charter arms pit bulls in 40 S&W. last night it took the Deputy's 45 minutes to
get here and they were responding immediately. So this gun control thing has me very concerned .
Dating ? I tried that, most the guys in my age group have just gotten out of a bad divorce and have
a real attitude about women. Or there is a real good reason they are still single like they are playing
the field and dont want to be attached. Or as you see here I can be a real bi**h sometimes and
another thing is i don't want to take a man to raise.

Wonder what kind of bat it was? Wonder If it was one of the ding bat variety? I have heard of that variety before. They tend to hang out alone, and appear to be disoriented. ;D

One time my friend and I went down to his farm house that is used mainly for a hunting camp, and just hanging out. He kept getting an occasional bat in his house at night, so during the day we found that they were hanging inside his chimney. So we lit a small fire and smoked them out. They all left in a hurry. Later that same weekend, we were talking to a guy that lives about a quarter mile away, and he said "Ya know, the funniest thing happened today. My basement door was open and all these bats flew in, bout 25 or 30 of them". Of coarse we couldn't keep a straight face, and told him what happened. We did help him get rid of them.

Every year we have a few bats out back eating bugs flying around about dusk.
We can feed them by throwing small pieces of hotdogs up.
Amazing how they can change direction 180* and nab a morsel thrown behind them and swoop down and get it before it gets within 10 feet from the ground.
Once while putting an addition on the house I was squatted down looking how I was going to run the plumbing wghen I felt what I thought was the dog touch my back. When I turned to pet him it was a bat that took off from my back.
I shot him while he was hanging on a stud with a 22cb round.
Shot a few other bats in the house with a daisy bb gun.
It was just a red ryder but it had enough power to do a complete pass through ind inbed the bb in the wall at the top of the stairs!!!
For some reason the wife wasn't impressed with my great shooting :o
I thought the bb stuck in the wallpapper gave it some pizazz.
I wanted to mount the bat right above the bb in an attack mode ,,,but again the wife frowned on that too ???

In the United States from 1995 through 2009, an average of two people per year have died of rabies associated with bats.

In the United States since 2005, an average of 24 people a year are killed by dog attacks.

In other words, your dogs were a bigger threat to you than the bat.

They do tend to scare the 'ell outta folks tho. Probably due to all those Dracula movies we watched as kids.

Remember when I was a kid, my ma would make my sisters wear scarves after dark when we played Hide & Seek, cause "the bats are gonna make a nest in yer hair!".

most latex paints have enough anti bacterial and anti mold in them to cause your septic to stop working too. Dont clean out brushes and pans, just throw them away. or wash them and dump the waste water in bushes.

Dont kill bats, they are mosquito eating machines, we put up bat houses to help them proliferate.

It's not that far to Santa Fe and quite a few have established residence there instead of making it to DC.  ;D It's also the time of year when they come out of the cracks and are seen on TV.

I see a bat once in awhile over here on the east side of the Pecos. I just leave them alone and they go on doing bat business. I consider them like snakes, helpful in controlling pests I really don't like.
