Inadvertantly mixed powders

Loaded four rounds of .45-70 for a trial of Varget at 45 grains.  Later decided to scratch Varget for now, and finish testing H4895.  So I pulled the bullets from the four rounds of Varget, totalling 180 grains, and dumped them back into the can, which had about 1/3 pound left in it.  Then realized the Varget was dumped into the H4895 can. (only one powder can is on the bench at any time).
 
So 180 grains of Varget are mixed into about 2,300 grains of H4895, being about 7% Varget in there.  The load data for these is very similar for the 350 cast bullet.
 
Since I could not well scoop out the Varget, I thoroughly mixed them in the can.
 
Is there any reason to discard the mixed powder?  Seems like since the load data is very similar between the two, that these would be fine for low to mid-level plinking loads in the Ruger #3.

2300 gr is about only $6-$8 worth of powder.
Aside from unsurety about the safety of it, I would toss it for accuracy's sake.


Actually I never toss powder; I pour it out in a long thin line on the driveway and light it. BWAHAHAHAHA.

it needs to go away.
there's not a can of powder worth
taking a chance on.


don't just throw it away though,
it needs to be burned safely somewhere.


just count it as a lesson well learned.

+1 on toss it.  No reason to risk wrecking a rifle or worse over a third of a pound of powder.

If you used data for slower of the two it is very unlikely that you would have a problem.

I inadvertantly mixed some H 335 with Varget ONCE. I used a screen and got out the H 335. One being ball and the other extruded it wasnt a big deal, time consuming yes. I'd toss it seeing as it cant be seperated. Makes a nice quick big fire.

just the oposite. use the data for the faster of the two powders and youll be fine. I once dumped a lb of re19 into a keg that had about two lbs of re22. i loaded it using the re19 data and it was fine. Only problem i had was i found one gun that shot bette with a load from that jug then anything ive tried before and theres really no way to do it again precisely so when it was gone so was that load. id be a bit more squeemish about doing it with a couple real fast burning pistol powders but you should have no problem with those two powders if you do like i said especailly considering there both so close and you dump such a small ammount in it. id bet youd find differnt lots of 4895 that vary more then your mix will.

My point is that although you will most likely be fine, as Lloyd said, you will never duplicate your results after you burn your current mix, also as Lloyd commented.  If you use it, I would only use it for plinking.

If you accidentally dumped 2 or 3 tablespoons of salt in your 1 cup sugar bowl would you still use it?   :o   I can't believe anyone would still want to try to use such a mix of gunpowder, but each to their own.  Won't happen at my place.

I've got to agree on this one , for the price of a pound of powder is it worth having something going very wrong ? Think about it !
