  A 10-year-old elementary school student in Northern Virginia is facing criminal charges after police say he brought a toy gun to school.
MyFoxDC.com reports that the boy, a fifth-grader at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School in Alexandria, Va., was arrested and charged with brandishing a weapon Tuesday after he allegedly showed off the weapon on a school bus.
 
Police say the boy showed the replica silver handgun on his way home from school on Monday and neglected to mention to others that the gun was a fake, according to the report. The gun reportedly has a black handle and orange tip.
When the boy arrived at school on Tuesday, police found the toy gun in his backpack, MyFoxDC.com reports. After his arrest, he was reportedly transported to a juvenile detention center and later released.
Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Morton Sherman told MyFoxDC.com the student has been suspended and officials are considering expulsion as a punishment.

When I was in grade school, a looong time ago, I took toy guns to school.  Actually wore two cap guns on a western rig.  No problems.  I took knives of all sizes to trade with friens.  When I had a cold, my dad mixed moonshine liquor and honey half and half in a bottle so the teacher could give me a tablespoon full as needed.  Kept it in my pocket.  When their was a fight between two students, the only one that got in trouble was the kid that started it.  We were allowed to defend ourselves.  The USA is a total mess now.  Getting worse and nobody doing anything to bring it back.

When I was in school we could bring toy guns to school . Most were water guns and we played with them on the play ground. Some cap guns also. In high school and college we were allowed to bring real guns . I hunted school grounds after school many times and forrest company land down the road from school. In college I kept several guns , a rifle , shotgun and revolver at school. No one got shot. My RA had his also as did others.
 As for the reply you seek . It would be an irrational one blaming the toy gun for the actions of a bad student using a different tool. But it is easier to comdem the toy than deal with the mental health and parenting issues .

Well when I was in middle and high school not only could you bring toy guns but you could bring real guns to school.
We had shooting teams and yes you used your own gun.
Middle school your parents had to bring it for you.
In high school if you drove to school you brought it with you.
Mine was a Winchester model 250 semi auto.
Don't recall anyone ever getting shot and while in high school it hung in the back glass of my truck on the parking lot at school all day and never once tried to kill anybody.
Same goes for the Savage model 24 over & under rifle/shotgun that hung just under it!
Ammo was behind the seat.

I agree with that- the punishment is stupid and much too harsh. I think the school administrators are so afraid it could happen in their schools, that they are over reacting .  When I went to school, we also took guns to school so we could hunt afterword. Guns were often brought to the " shop" classes to be worked on. It's a different time now. There is so much anger that it spills out in may ways. Years ago you could get into a bar fight and win, lose or draw, you came out of it alive. That's also changed. Get  into a fight and you get shot. Just look at the hate spilled here and you get an idea of the angry twisted world we live in. Yes , we all wish things were better. BUT THEIR NOT.

It was a toy gun.  When I was a kid we would have the toy, no matter what it was - Squirt gun, Toy gun, Rubber band gun, spit ball shooter, tonka truck, frisbee, or other conficated.  And our name would be attached to it and on the last day of school we were handed stuff back and off we went.  So as long as they freak out about any toy and have the kid arrested OK. 
Calling a toy gun a weapon is a little over the top. 
And you are upset about a kid bringin a toy and equaling it to a real gun.  Would you be upset if a kid brought a toy truck and expect a kid to drive up in a real pick up and some kids get hurt? 
Now I can see the problem if it was one of the spring air 6mm guns, those hurt and can poke an eye out if loaded.  My parents would buy them for us as kids and keep the yellow rubber BB's so we did not hurt each other while playing cops and robbers or army.

Again, If the kid brings a toy truck or match box cars to school do you think, a kid will drive up in a real car?  After all kids have more access to a car than to a gun.  Parents tend to lock up firearms but leave the car keys out on the counter. 
I think you really need to look at who is doing a knee jerk reaction.  After all Cars kill more people than guns by a large margin.
The President in his lies of the union address sad there were over 1,000 gun violence deaths since the Sandy Hook moron shot up a school.  Three things need to be remembered in that statistic.  All Shootings are counted as gun violence.  So all suicides, all police shootings, all gang homocides, and any self defence shootings are counted.  As far as that stats go all we hear is 1,000 people, and it could be 200 susicides, 6 hundred gang related, 100 police shootings, and 100 self defence shootings. 
It is all about emotion andd not about reason or facts.
