Wool Blanket Sweater.

Here is a sweater I made from a Harbor Freight 80/20 Wool Blanket today. I got the idea from this video on youtube:

i don't guess i recall ever seeing any blankets
at the local harbor freight. maybe something
that has to be ordered?


those canvas painters tarps they sell make a really
nice ground cloth to roll out your bag on
when in the bush, and they work fairly
well for painting too !

   I worked for a while at Harbor Freight as a retirement job.  The blankets were a great deal.
 
   They use to stock them in a very nice red color as well.   Those may have been discontinued.  I picked up a few for as little as $8 each when they were running specials.
 
    The blankets are not very heavy duty, and are lightly woven, so I think they could be used fairly easily as cloth.   I swear, the green ones use to come in a package that labelled them as a "moving blanket."   
 
  They are somewhat smaller than a regular size blanket, but are just right for one person.
 
   If you buy one, you should immediately open up the package and inspect the blanket.  They are so loosely woven that at times, some would turn up with a "thin spot" in them, that you could practically see through.  If you get one of these, walk right back in the store and they will happily give you an exchange or refund.

I have a stack of the military(US) wool blankets, wounder how one of those would work? The ones I have are all brand new.

i'd count my blessings and not
cut those up if they're the real deal.
 i use to have a couple of those,
but i was young and stupid and didn't
take care of them and let the bugs
eat 'em up and didn't keep 'em as clean
as i should and needless to say they
didn't last.
i'd get some of those not-so-good ones
to cut up.

Agreed. Cut one of the Chinese ones from Harbor Freight up and save the US ones.

   If the blankets are currently priced at $9.99, you can get one for just $8.00 by using the standard Harbor Freight 20% off coupon that you will find in all of the NRA magazines, most of the big gun magazines, and the Cycle World magazines. 
 
   You are only allowed to use one coupon per day, on one item, so you will have to get a few and go back a few times.   But at that price, they are a steal.  (My red blanket is labelled, Made in India.)

how's the project jacket holding up?


i finally did find one of those blankets
at the local store. it had been taken out
of the package and looked over i guess.
the package was right there and i stuck it
back in and bought it. had a coupon. (i think
it was like 8.00 with coupon) the thing
does have that uniform company red shop
rag smell. i've aired it out some and it did help
a little. maybe next trip they'll have some more.
not too bad for the price. i used to have some
nearly the same bought back in the '90's
for a little less. these work good for trail
bedding but a little thin, but again, for the price. . . . .

I have taken them out for some summer camping and they do ok. The Nesmuk bag that I made is fashioned from two and is warm down to about 45/50 degrees but around 40 I start to get cold at night[/size][size=78%].[/size]

i'm gonna try this week to get
another and see how they hold up.
i can say from experience with the
others for long term storage to put
'em in one of those big ziplock bags
with the vacuum cleaner port on the
side. keeps the varmints out pretty good.
