WHY A 460 ROLAND
« on: February 09, 2013, 01:28:08 AM »
I have been reading--thanks a lot guys and gals  >:( >:( >:( about this and it is intriguing.
Couple of questions:
What ammo can you use---I am assuming the same as a 460 S&W.
I am liking the comps I read about---the kits seem pretty simple--not sure that I would not let a Smith work it up though.
I still am not sure about why I find it to be interesting.
Blessings

Willie:  the 460 rowland and the 460 S&W are not the same.  One is a cartridge developed for the 1911 platform and the other is a large revolver round.  I think the Rowland takes the 1911 platform to its max potential and while it definately outpowers the 45 acp, the 1911 needs to be heavily sprung (22 lb recoil springs or better) and recoil buffers might also be welcomed.  The nice thing about a compensator is that the additional weight helps reduce felt recoil when the slide is going backward during the extraction and ejection cycle but there is nothing to reduce the slamming effect of a compensated slide going forward.

I know this will break yer little heart but I am gonna ask yer sweetheart from the 1911 forum to comment on this issue as she has written about such things previously and is well endowed (thought that might mess with ya a bit) with significant knowledge in this area.

I have been toying with the idea of acquiring a .460 Rowland Drop in kit for years. Have not done it. I have done the .45 Super and the .400 CorBon but the Rowland cartridge still awaits.
The previous post is accurate. The Rowland is a slightly lengthened, strengthened .45 ACP case. Starline makes the brass.
A friend of mine has one and I have had the opportunity to shoot his. It's is a 1911 with somewhat snappier recoil.
The claim about the round is that it will give one .44 Magnum ballistics from a 1911. Load data shows very impressive correlations between similar bullet weights.
Data from Clark Custom: http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/460loadchart.htm

darkgael:  actually, if cor-bon had not messed with a already successful case design when they marketed their 400 cor-bon, the cartridge would have been on the 41 magnum level; so in comparison, getting a 230 gn 45 acp slug out the barrel at 1200'/sec or something similar is near enough to 44 magnum levels to work.  I think with a long slide, 6" bbl and compensator, the 460 Rowland should be impressive enough to seriously consider it.

William - oh please, not a country song.  I am certain that she who feathers your dreams and thoughts of younger times considers me simply as a washed out old man and I most seriously doubt she would even turn her head if we passed on the street, unless she ran me dwon with her wheelchair.........

As of the persent---due mostly to ammo prices and availibilty I must withdraw my thoughts---well not witdraw but it is not a serious consideration.
I got wrapped up in the 9x23 once upon a time and that proved to be a GOOD consideration----I am not as sure about this one.

Hand loading the Rowland cartridge is the way to go. Load data, however, though available, is sparse and components, if not already on hand, are also.

Well y'kno how addicts like to recruit more addicts. Guns like the '460 Rowland aren't for the run-of-the-mill-bar-stool-kinda-guys'.  They're at their best in the game fields.  I'm almost too old for hunting but impressed every time I take it to the range. What with its all-business hard hitting straight line trajectory, I find myself trying to wipe a silly grin off my face
