20 gauge 22" youth barrel question
« on: February 09, 2013, 01:36:12 AM »
I have a youth 22'' 20 gauge modified choke barrel.  My question is did NEF make a 22'' 20 gauge FULL choke barrel?  I have looked and looked and can't find any info on this.  I have found what I think is one.  I have to act quick though.

Everything that I have seen is that all the 22 inch barrels are modified choke. although anything is possible.  my suggestion is that if its the correct length and the choke measures out right. BUY IT
H&R/NEF 10, 12,16 20 28 ,410 .243 45 357 45lc. 1919a4, uzi, sten mK 2,3,5 M2HB, 1917a1, ak74(2) amd 65, RPK (2) 11 aks and 50 other guns....

I appreciate your feedback, and I will go back and check it out more in depth.  I may just own it.  Details to follow.

I believe the 20" Tamer barrel in 20 gauge is FULL choke. I haven't seen any 22" FULL but that doesn't mean they're not out there.

I have a 22" 20 gauge full choke, bought it in a pawn shop last summer.  The serial is NN if that helps.

YRU, wow you have just created another, search for me...thanks!  LOL  Thanks for the NN serial id.

Doublebass,  yes the cool Tamer is a 20 gauge with a full choke.  Its definately on the bucket list of my 20's.  Too bad its stainless only.
***update*** Well the one was a 26" full choke and not a 22".  It was an ok shape gun, but I walked at $80.  But even better, I walked around and seen another youth 22" modified choke 20 gauge.  It has the NW series and the newer forearm style, full length stock, really really nice shape, it is not a case colored action though... needless to say I left with it for $70.  These things are awesome and by all means my favorite Pardner.

Don't let the production year of the NN frame trick ya on what was factory issued, H&R has fitted thousands of accessory barrels that were available at one time to frames made 1987-on, so it makes it hard to tell if it was a factory offering on the original frame, only H&R would know for sure.  ;)

Compared to what I seen Friday at the Jefferson,WI gunshow (moneygrab) you got a deal. First was a pardner 20 gauge mod regular length barrel in good shape for $130.00. Next I think was a Topper 88 same setup for $150.00. Going back tomorrow to see if either one sold. As far as the full choke goes I am having my GS ream and thread my 22" 20 gauge for a Truchoke tube. $40.00 for the machine work and $20.00 for the tube. Also having it d&t for a scope.

I just looked at a bunch of old catalogs, in 2004 H&R offered a 20ga full choke 22" barrel on their Pardner Youth Turkey gun.

papadave,
I seen quite a few Toppers for the $150 and under range. I just really am a Pardner person and I want to persue the Handi Rifles as well.  Lots of $110 and under Pardners, but granted the were nothing more than run of the mill pretty rough offerings.  I did find one extraordinary H&R Huntsman in .45 cal, but $250 pricetag ran me away.  Thanks, stew

Nice find.  Really something to look for now.  Nobody here even gives them a second look here, thats where I come in.   Because of the interchangability of the offerings, I have to pick them all up just to take a look at.

Thought I'd post a pic here, since they are both mentioned in this thread. Top is a 20 gauge Tamer, modified choke, with Choate stock and "storearm". Bottom is a 22 inch, full choke, 20 gauge Pardner Youth Turkey gun (serial #NU...) like new, that came from the pawn shop with youth sized camoflauge palletwood stock/forearm, which I switched out for an adult Synthetic stock set bought off GBO classifieds. It will be my turkey gun this spring... 8) ...

Have fun!

Scott, what a great pair!  That's what I envision with one of mine like you Tamer. The other I will probably leave stock...Grrr but my 11 yr old says leave it alone. The top one is a NP and its going to get new furniture. The bottom NW is the boy's gun and it is minty. Picked it up for $70 today

The other pic is my 10 gauge custom for turkeys and the 12 gauge NF I picked up this week. Real nice but I think it may find a home the fund a project

The stock on the camouflaged gun appears to be a Choate Checkered model with a low comb.  The company does'nt seem to remember making this version :o !  Were there by chance any more where you found this 1?

Jeff

Jeff, keep an eye on the GBO(H&R) classifieds, they show up from time to time....This stock set came off a newer centerfire rifle IIRC, they seem to sell rather quickly. Good Luck!

Thank you sir, and I'll do just that :D !  I'm going with the Checkered forend on this "Shorty 12" and would like the stock to match if possible.  That makes 'em hold tighter patterns, you know ::) ...

Jeff

I use Federal Heavyweight Flitecontrol  3" 1½oz #7 in my full choke 20ga TDC, they offer 1-5/16oz , 4-5 6 lead versions too that cost less. The #7 Heavyweight has about the same per pellet energy as #5 lead and penetrates better, but there are 1/3 more pellets.

Thanks Tim,
I will try to pick some up to pattern in the modified choke version.  What kind of distance?

The turkey target was shot at 40yds as stated, the turkey was hammered at about 30yds, thru the full choke I wouldn't hesitate to use it to about 50yds or so, dunno how the modified choke would do, but it's worth a try, Federal recommended a non-ported full choke when I asked em.
