Deja what ??
« on: February 09, 2013, 04:59:29 PM »
Have you ever set down and analyzed carefully just what your ideal battery would look like, what you think the really great guns would include ? You set out the specs and do some research and realize...... you have them ? Well, at least MOST of them.  And even if you dont have the specific model, you can duplicate the performance. There are a couple  I might like.....I think I had better start upgrading optics for my next phase. Has anyone seen a talo  lately? :)

The whole thing is an exercise in futility.  I upgrade the ones I'll never part with, but the wanna haves change daily, and they come and go.  I don't think I'll ever have the battery I want.......at least for not more than a day or two. ::)

Yes
Ive done it lots of times
But it keeps morphing  :-\
I seem return to a sportsmans 'ideal battery' list of about 100yrs ago for reference:
22Short (I use 22LR, there are loads now at any level of performance suitable to a LR chamber)
22WRF or 22WCF (I use the 22WMR)
32-20WCF (hard to beat the 30-30, load it down or up to full, a 357Max would fit here too, but I have 38-55s)
40-65 or 45-70 (only if you 'need' more than a top loaded 30-30)
12ga. (I really like the 20, but lighter 16 or 20ga. loads in a 12 would do as well unless you want a really lightweight upland gun; my two dbls, SxS and O/U each go under 6# loaded)
Handgun(s), a RF and/or a CF
Just try to keep to the list  :P

Mine changes often too. Somehow, I think, my wife is not amused.  ::)

Pete, you said it so true; it keeps changing!  Just when I think I have all I need, (30-06, 7-08, 30-30. /223 and .22 lr ) plus a bunch of pistols, I read some article on the .260 rem, or .243 or some other nice, light, versitle cartridge and I want it!  I get it, then hear of something else I want that I didn't know I needed.  I do think I have it covered pretty good at the moment, the only hole might be something longer range like a .270 if I get an antelope hunt sometime.  But I'm sure the 30-06 or 7-08 would also work fine if I'm careful so I'm covered.  What I really need is more chances to shoot the guns I own rather than buy new ones.  Of course with the shortages now, I'll be very careful not to shoot too much and get low on ammo!  I'm good!  44 Man

Tim, all I can say is you really "need" both.  I wouldn't part with either and hopefully I'll pass both on to my grandson.  I'm hung up on the shorties and the Superlights.  I've also got a very warm place in my heart for the .35s.  The shorty Maxi and the .356/.358 among the better things I've  done.  The shorty .38-55 is right there with them.  That's another great shorty caliber.  I thank you and George for them.

I hear ya Pete, I prolly wouldn't have sold the second Maxi if another member didn't need it more than I did, he rented the reamer to cut a barrel for his son just before the season, ended up cutting the chamber too deep, so I offered him my Maxi barrel so he could hunt with his son, he made the maxi with the deep chamber a 356 IIRC, so it's all good.  ;)

I had to read that post twice to see what happened to the long chamber ::) I actually will pick up a 357 barrel if I find one reasonable, I dont want a maxi, but I will have it reamed to a Herrett since I have a lifetime supply of 30/30 brass. Have it cut to 16 1/2 inches, put a youth synthetic stock on it- a 30 inch 5 pound rifle :) ;)
