45 Colt BC accuracy with Lee 200gr RNFP
« on: February 10, 2013, 02:48:57 PM »
Has anybody had any success with the above bullet in their Handi? I can't seem to do very well at all with group size, even at fifty yards Have tried Unique, 2400, and Bullseye. 3 to 4 inch groups are about the best I've gotten. Thanks for any help you can give me with this.

I can't answer your question, but I have a BC Classic in 45 Colt. I am going to shoot 300 grain lead flat nosed Montana bullets in it.I need to get it zeroed in, but have been messing with other stuff. Good Luck, Pete

Tom,
I have shot a similar bullet but with the same results as you. I gave up and started loading them with TB for fun plinking.

Thanks, Dinny

I forgot to tell you that my bullets are .454" diameter. I think most with these carbines have found that to be the chamber size. I used gcrank's method of sizing with fired brass to check for bullet needed. The .454" just fit inside the unsized brass case with just a little finger pressure. The bullet will conform to bore size.

I have both a 44 rifle and a 44 revolver. The LEE 44 200 gr RNFP shoots great in the rifle, terrible in the revolver. Bullets that do well in the revolver are atrocious in the rifle.

I say this just to hint that that bullet, so similar in 44 and 45, might be just as picky in 45 as I have found it to be in 44.

Tom, I hope you are not sizing the bullet down to jacketed bullet size. If you are, try them as cast dia. if you can and see what happens.
Also, dont try to drive them too fast, even if its a harder alloy.
You could have some issues with the factory throat/leade/angle; it may be a long slide to it and a not lead bullet friendly angle to enter the rifling.
Work on the bullet dia. thing first and we'll go from there.

Thank you all for your input.

gcrank1 - Slugged my bore and it comes out at .453. Shimmed the mold and they come out way oversize so I size them back down to .454. I gotten best results with Unique. Moderate charges showing the best results. Think I may try Lee's 255gr mold and see if it's better. Not quite sure I want to give up on the 200gr so soon though.

Once you fire a cartridge how does that .454 fit in the fire-formed case mouth? (make sure there is no remnant of the crimp rolling inward to check this)
