Winchester 100
« on: February 10, 2013, 04:53:25 PM »
A buddy at work have me a Winchester mod100 in 308. It went under water during Hurricane Katrina. It's pretty rough but I finally managed to get it apart. Bubba had already broken the stock and action bar near the bolt handle. I soaked it in Kroil the last 2weeks to free the bolt. The barrel is toast and the receiver has a little pitting on the top in the rear. All the rest of the receiver seems to be in really good shape. The stock is a easy fix and I am a competent welder. Welding(tig) the bar a good idea? I'll have my Smith inspect the receiver and re barrel if its good to go. It still has the original firing pin so a call to Win for the recall pin will be made as well. Sorry for the long post, hehe.

Thanx

The action bar is a high stress part but welding may hold?. In any case I'd look for a replacement action bar.. The 100 is a good autoloading rifle and can be put up in several calibers.. Let us know how the restoration turns out..

Gonna let my Smith check out the receiver before I go any further. I read a lot about the 100, seems like it had a few quirks along the way. I really hope it can be salvaged.

.
It sounds like another good chance for a .358 Win autoloader - I had a fairly new (at the time) .243 Model 100 Carbine rebored to .358 by P.O.Akley in the early 70's & it made a great hunting rifle.
