We need to take control of the ongoing debate on gun control. Any time we see or hear the term "gun violence" we need to jump in and point out that as a bigoted terminology. Any focus on "gun violence" assumes that guns are the problem and therefore some form of gun control must be the solution. But guns are not the problem, violence is the problem and guns are very often the solution, where as gun control has been proven to never be a solution. We don't have firm numbers as to how often guns are used by law abiding citizens to deter violence, estimates vary from 65,000 to 2.5 million times per year, but even that smallest number is four times more often than firearms are used in homicide. But the narrow focus on gun violence precludes any consideration of the positive effect of firearms. We need to jump in at every opportunity to point out that the problem is violence, not "gun violence".
Likewise we should take every opportunity to point out that while rifles are involved in less than 3% of all crimes of violence, certain psychiatric medications such as Prozac have been found to be involved in nearly ALL mass shootings. Don't let them deflect by saying "Oh we are going to look at mental health" right after we finish banning guns. But no, make it clear that it is not about some vague issue of "mental health", we are talking specifically about a certain few drugs, some of which even list "manic and suicidal behavior" as know side effects yet are widely prescribed for children who act up. Yet that remains a little know fact. There can be no doubt that the pharmaceutical industry, at over $300 billion per year pulls a lot more weight then the NRA, the drug companies own not only every politician in Washington but every TV network as well.
