ruger old model flattop .44 magnum 71/2 barrel
« on: February 12, 2013, 04:00:05 PM »
I found an almost new looking .44 blackhawk flattop with the 7-1/2 in. barrel in a pawn shop yesterday. serial no. 170xx (I added the xx's cause I've seen everbody else do that) I ran home and gathered up two guns I hate and sold them at ANOTHER gunshop to fund the ruger (i'm 60, laid off, and financially deficit) ...sold a tc. stainless contender with two barrels and a burris scope and a pinned barrel s&w model 63. found some decrepit .44 brass last night and fired off 25 reloads this morning. first rd. hit the 1 inch orange circle I had stuck on a papa john's pizza box at 25 yards. yes, it was a fluke, as the rest never got closer than two inches. now, I find that ruger only made a limited number of the 7-1/2 flattop blackhawks (not the super) and maybe I should not be casually pumping homecast bullets thru it all the time as it may have some collector value because of the barrel length. should I get the factory letter for this, or just use it carefully? i'm not the collector type, but love shooting the oldmodel rugers. oh, and it has NOT been converted to the transfer bar, and never will. yes, I only loaded five at a time today....

I'd shoot it and enjoy it...Life's too short to buy something for someone else to enjoy!!!  :)

A few years back, I bought a 50 Anniversary .44 mag that had never been shot...

I took care of that pretty quickly... :)

Nice find; you made a good choice (dump the ones ya dont like so much for one ya do).
Shoot it, but care for it. Cast reloads will never wear it out. IMHO it may be one of the most desirable so you wont ever lose money on it and get to play with it whenever ya want. What could be better than that?

I ran out of .44 bullets today, and it seems molds are out of stock everywhere! I have hundreds of lb.s of range scrap, and no .44 mold! but the search is 90% the satisfaction of finding...

Have you checked NOE for moulds? I to have a 7.5" Blackhawk 44 mag and yes they are quite rare and bring a premium price. I shoot mine quite often and figure that it will be my heirs that wish I had left it in the safe. (really they will be more satisfied with a gun that Dad used the hell out of).

I shoot mine with either 10.0 gr. of Unique or 8.8 gr. of Power Pistol with a 260 gr. RCBS KT bullet. Awesome gun and a good (and rare) find.

Nice example of a 7-1/2" barreled .44 Flattop.  The gun itself is worth around $1,000 +/_ a bit depending on exact condition, boxed?
quality of walnut grips (some will be found with Stag or Ivory grips which send the values UP!

Toss in a proper box ($250-$500) and you can end up with one heck of a package..........

IMHO, flintlock's comparison of values between a dime a dozen commemorative issue or the real deal is NOT applicable in this case!

yeah, that's nice! no box with mine, but I sent yesterday for a factory letter, just cause I could. found a mold and cast some 240 tumble lubes ,one chamber throat is a bit large, but I couldn't tell any difference today at the range. it shoots good enough for me so i'm very satisfied with it. I bet it would shoot really well if I could actually see the sights!

Those ramp fronts just seem to blend into the background for me now. I have some bright fingernail polish from my wife to try out a dab on the very tip when the weather gets better here in SC WI (still winter for sure and certain). I sure wish Ruger had seen fit to put the same type of replaceable front sight on the S-BH as on the RH, but it still wouldnt have done you any good with your old original.
BTW, Im going with the idea of a 'paint' dab in a 'dayglow' kinda color after trying a friends Sgl. Six with a FireSight type replacement front; WOW, not only could I see the sight, the groups and hits were great even though the sight seemed to 'glow' so big.

FL, if your 44 is as nicely fit and finished as my 50th 357 you got a dandy too. I'll give the plastic box this, it wont fall to pieces like so many of the cardboard ones over time.......
Watch out what you use to wipe it down with over the gold inlay lettering, some stuff might lift it.

Alice Cooper(what a stage name), I just bought a series 3(collard center pin) flat top myself. Have never owned one before but, always wished I had one. Being a 3rd change it has a 6 & 1/2" barrel on it. Shooter grade of course but, pure love in the making.
