.357 Barrels - Supply and Demand
« on: February 15, 2013, 11:38:30 PM »
It seems to me that quite a few folks are looking for .357 barrels.  There's one for sale now in the classifieds for 165, and several ads in the Want to Buys.  I recently bought a couple of Superlight barrels from H&R.  My cost was 146.90 each including Michigan Sales Tax plus the cost of a small flat rate box to send the frame.  I got the barrels back in two weeks from the time I mailed the frames, perfectly fitted. The .357s are in stock at H&R and you have the option of sending a SB1 or a SB2 frame.

If I were in the market for another .357 barrel, I'd get it now while H&R has them.  Let's say you find one here for 125 shipped.  You'll save thirty bucks, but you still have to fit it......and you could wind up with a tomato stake if you only had one frame to work with.

Just my two cents on the subject.

Some days I wonder if people know the barrel accessory program exists. ???  I contacted Brian56 a few weeks ago and they still have some 357 Talo barrels available as well.

That Talo barrel makes a very nice .356/.358.  Mine's 18 inches and shoots.

If the rumors are true that I'm hearing it may get even worse , Ohio is considering doing a pistol cartridge rifle for Deer , sorta in the lines of what In. did a couple years ago , if that happens then the number of folks looking for 357 , 44 and 45 colt long guns will go up considerably .

For the life of me, I don't understand why we have to pester Brian56 to find out what's in inventory.  Why aren't they on the accessory page?  You'd think they might be interested in selling them.

Richard, Michigan has been diddling around with the same idea for the southern part of the State.  If that went through, it'd really pump up demand.  It seems the single shot pistol shooters have it on hold for the time being.  They don't want to loose rifle calibers in a hand gun.  Can't say as I blame them.

Stimpy that is great news!  Shotgun slugs were an answer to a question that should have never been asked.  I retired my slug gun after getting my 357 Maxi.

Not to Hi-jack this thread but with the new In-line ML's , basicly all you have is a single shot CF rifle that loads backwards .  ???

Maybe someone finely got that through the heads of the boys at the state level .  ;)

And as for rifle cartridges in a SS pistol , that never made any sense to me either , a 14" Contender but not a 16" rifle , which would have better control over shot placement ?

Richard, the bureaucrats that dream up that kind of legislation haven't got clue about things like that.  I'm sure not 10% of them know you can shoot an '06 out of a handgun.  Hunting regulations should be made by the State's DNR, not by the legislature.  Were that the case, we'd have a dove season and a wolf hunt in Michigan.

I think the various state game departments have figured out that the pistol calibers are less hazardous to your health than modern shotguns with saboted rounds.  I use a rifle for everything I legally can.  Anyone can knock a bushytail out of a tree with a 12 ga.  It's a lot more fun to line him up with a branch or trunk and take him with a rifle.   I quit deer hunting in shotgun only zones when I was a kid and never went back.

Pete don't assume the DNR folks have any more sense then the people we elect, the DNR is appointed by the elected.  A couple years back the Wizards of Smart of the Indiana DNR came up with a plan to reduce the deer population by reducing the hunting season from about 3 weeks to 9 days.  I'm not sure how less days to hunt equals a bigger harvest but that was the DNR math.  The hunters reaction to the proposal was to put a new handle on the pitchfork and shine the tines.  The DNR quietly dropped the proposal.

Our field biologists, COs, etc. for the most part are well trained, dedicated and educated people.  An appointed bureaucrat would be wise, like the boot Lieutenant, to listen to his Gunny.  Some are smart enough to do so.  Others, unfortunately are not or listen more closely to their political gong.  I knew the former director of Michigan DNR personally when he was our local District Manager.  He was knowledgeable and astute and a very wise appointment to the Directorship.  Things went well during his tenure.

If we don't get the people we want on the job, it's our responsibility to sharpen our pencils at the polls and get out and stump for what we want.

This came from Brian on Jan. 29.  Go through the standard barrel accessory process.

The part # is ( F403635 ). the price is $135.00 for the barrel, $19.00 for shipping, $25.00 for barrel fitting plus state tax.

Amen Pete... it's to the point where it's better and usually cheaper to get a barrel straight from the factory. You get professional fitting and it comes back ready to shoot. No muss no fuss. Some of the prices on here are too high (22 VP barrel) but... have you seen Ebay??? :o :o  Good Lord.
Hands down this is still the best site on the web for buying/selling Handi's and their parts... the "old timers" on here are very fair and trustworthy. Let's just hope the Ebay crowd doesn't get a foothold here.

This is the stupid scenario I talked about earlier.  They don't show on the Accessory Barrel list.  If I went by that, I wouldn't have half the barrels I now own.  All you can do is PM Brian56 and ask if he still has any.  He can advise you where to go from there.  Good luck.

....
Pete

I think they watch too much TV, or read too many Gun Rags.

same thing happens when someone asks about a good handload for a 30-30 using TTSX's

many jump on the guy about pointy bullets in a lever with tube mag....

I like to snap back saying my 4 30-30's have levers on top, and sides, but none on the bottom, and certainly no tube mags....
