I applaud these companies and think we need to put pressure on Sig, S&W and GLOCK to do likewise.

I appreciate their principled stand, it would be great if Colt, S&W, Remington, Ruger and a few others would join in. It is a very good point that police should never be exempted from any law. When someone asks "why to you need that evil gun" a perfectly reasonable response would be "why do cops need them?"
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
