Scope recommendations?
« on: February 18, 2013, 06:27:20 AM »
I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel, so I thought I'd draw on the collective experience of the forum.  I'm looking for a scope and mounts for my RWS 48.  The listings that I see at the various Air Gun sellers are not clear as to what power system a particular scope is suitable for, such as PCP, springer etc.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

   Hey RD
Gotta say that the 48 is a hard recoiling springer and will eat a scope in no time. My RWS 54 went through 4 or 5 scopes before I found one that held up. The mount was just as important but I found a good setup that has held up perfectly. The mount is available from pyramyd air and is made by UTG. Its all you'll ever need for that particular rifle.

My favorite scope is surprisingly inexpensive. The Hawke sport HD model is tough as nails, I've had 4 or 5 of them and they're bulletproof. Quite bright and clear too, compared to leapers scopes, which are also springer rated but don't have quite as much performance. The best all around model is about 80 bucks, its the 3x9x40 AO sport model.

Note that this setup still requires weaver style rings, here a good 4 screw per cap set..

JR, Thanks for the input.  For years I used a Weaver 4x rimfire scope on my Feinwerkbaugh.  It has a very similar action to your 54.  With the fixed action of the 48, I figure I'll have a time trying to find something that will hold up.  Hope it's worth it.

Thanks again.

Your certainly welcome. The only springer rated scopes I know of that work longterm, are leapers/UTG\centerpoint(same company) Hawke, leupold, bushnell(all models), Nikon and Burris. All of these companies products are supposedly made to handle reverse recoil from airguns, although I'll say I've killed leupolds and bushnells on magnum springers multiple times. I have damaged one leapers too, out of 6 or 8 of them. The Hawkes have been 100% so far, as well as having more forgiving eyeboxes, eye relief and are brighter and clearer for about the same price. Even the 39.00 4x hawke sport sold at eabco is very tough.

No matter what scope you go with, you really will NEED that mount I gave a link to, it stops the weak aluminum rail that comes with the rws48 from shearing off, which they do very commonly.

Also need to mention the inexpensive Walther brand of scope, I don't know who really makes them but they have also held up well for me on springers and can be found inexpensively on ebay.

  Best of luck!  Jeff

I checked that mount.  Supposedly it won't fit my rifle with the 06 trigger.  BTW, got the 48 today.  On my gallery range, 50ft., with the open iron sights it's printing 3/8" 5 shot groups.  Not bad for an old blind guy.  The rifle may have a bit to do with it also.

Well congrats on your rifle 8) glad to hear its shooting perfect. The 48 is such a sweet rifle, Its so short that the weight balances out like a much lighter gun. They are tanks buildwise.

I'd never heard that about the t6 trigger but appreciate the clarification. Can't imagine what the difference might be but maybe they made improvements to the scope rail with that model. Mine were all older rifles.

Just target shooting or planning on small game \ pesting?  J

Initially the intended use was just to keep shooting during the current insanity (ammo shortage), however I'm finding myself becoming obsessive / compulsive in regards to the accuracy of the air guns.  It should also be quite useful in controlling yard pests.  I'm suffering from a rather steep learning curve at present.  Yesterday I was shooting 1/4" groups at 25 yards and today the groups are around an inch to inch and a half.  Go figure.  Best I can figure out is this weapon is temperature sensitive.  Most confusing was the RWS Super H.  Yesterday I shot a group that was less than a quarter of an inch and today, same everything, the Super H grouped around four inches.  At least trying to figure all this out keeps me off the street.

Yup, the 4x and the 3x9x32 that comes with assorted airguns and a few .22lr's ARE junk. All the models with brass turrets or external \locking target turrets are good to go on anything you mount them on. The scopes with the coin slot to adjust are the 2 cheap models.  J

My Beeman Sportsman RS-2 is kind of a hard recoiler, the scope that cam with it had bad parallax at typical yard varmint air rifle distances but has been OK on a 22LR for 25yd and on.
I put on a BSA AR 2-7x32 and all was well, the rifle went from 'frustrating' to a tight grouper (I almost gave up on it, but I guess I did get a bunch of break in shots downrange). So far no problem with the BSA scope and Im quite pleased.
