Suppressor questions

Want to make sure I am clear on this.  If a suppressor is permanently attached to a rifle barrel and the overall length of the barrel including the permanent suppressor is +16" then I don't have an SBR?   Also, what would constitute "permanent" regarding the suppressor attachment?

where they get you technicaly is its only legal if you bought it that way. If you buy a barrel and a suppressor and cut the barrel and weld on the suppressor you arent really legal. reason is that the moment you cut that barrel off you have an illegal weapon. Even if its only for  10 minutes. Some interpet this law a bit differntly. If you are doing something like an ar15 and remove the barrel its the reciever thats the gun not the barrel and as long as you dont trial fit the barrel to the reciever before you weld on the suppressor you should be ok but personaly i wouldnt want to risk having to explain it to a federal judge. especially right now when we are under the microscope with all of this assult rifle ban crap.

why concern yourself with the SBR rules? You are under the same class of rules with a suppressor. Since you are going to do a suppressor just get all done at once.

 Basically a barrel shroud is how I see high end airguns manufacturers get around the law. The shroud is permanently built around the entire barrel from breech to muzzle. The baffles are built into the shroud and each shroud is proprietary to that particular make and caliber. These shrouds are found on guns made for use with 3000psi high pressure air. They are VERY loud without the shrouds.  J

The reason that you would want to do this is if you don't want a sbr but don't want the length of the suppressor sticking out past your 16 in barrel and it will save you 200 bucks. I have seen letters from the BATF stating that is is acceptable. However as mentioned above it still resides in a gray area. With the Supreme Court up holding the BATF's argument about intent they could make charges stick. They arrested a guy that had an AK and an AK pistol upper and said he had intent to commit a crime. I don't like it (because if it is true the everyone is guilty of some sort of felony), but it is what we have to deal with.

The ATF procedure for measuring barrel length is to measure from the closed bolt (or breech-face) to
the furthermost end of the barrel or permanently attached muzzle device. Permanent methods of
attachment include full-fusion gas or electric steel-seam welding, high-temperature (1100°F) silver
soldering, or blind pinning with the pin head welded over. Barrels are measured by inserting a dowel rod
into the barrel until the rod stops against the bolt or breech-face. The rod is then marked at the
furthermost end of the barrel or permanently attached muzzle device, withdrawn from the barrel, and
measured.


So if you are going to do it you should have the work done buy someone with a NAF manufacturing license.

Not knowing what type rifle you wish to install the suppressor on  I offer this incase it fits. With alot of rifles you can get a slincer( on the ATF form they are called slincers  ) that is infact part of the bbl. I have seen several Rugers done this way from 22 LR to 44 mag. Looks like a 16 inch bull barrel.
BTW when I was checking on an upper with a short barrel and long flash sup. only welding was acceptable no soder or mechanical means . But then different ATF offices might have different views.

Well I solved this problem by eliminating the SBR aspect.  Bought a 300 AAC upper with an over 16" barrel.   Now to find a "can" and get the paperwork rolling.
