Anyone ever convert an 8x57 to 9.3x57?

 I'm curious. When an 8x57 is rebored to 9.3, does the neck/throating have to be done also or is it necessary? Ordinarily, I would think it would, but since the 9.3x57 keeps the same shoulder angle/taper, is it necessary? I've called several places that rebore to ask, but no one at home so far. Any 9.3x57 users out there?

RevJim:  you might be better off by simply having the rifle rebarrelled with a proper throat.  jmo.

My 9.3 has a long throat to accomodate the standard long 286 grain slug.I would assume that a proper chamber reamer would cut the chamber for the standard COL for the round with the 286 slug.Usually 8x57 are chambered to fit the 196 grain loading even as the Germans settled on the 150 grain loadings later. Lothar Walther has barrels in that caliber if so desired.

Then you could always have it chambered for the 9.3x62, which was the "magnum" of 1902.   I love my 9.3x62 as I can even hunt in Africa where it is accepted as a "big game" cartridge.

 I like the 9.3x62, but my 35 Whelen Improved took its place. I was thinking of those slender little Husqvarna Mod 98s in either 8x57 or , preferably, 9.3x57. I'm not after rip roaring loads, just 286s around 2100 or so, woods loads. I am thinking of it as a mild .358 Winchester. Thanks, was just wondering.

Don't overlook the Swedish model 95. It's what I use and it great.

Woops!   That's a Swedish Model 96 or Model 38.   Both good accurate rifles.

Yes the neck and throat need to be redone.  When they open the bore from 8mm to 9.3 it takes out the old neck and throat. It is the same when going from 30-06 to 35 Whelen my reborer did it no extra charge.
It is usually much cheaper to rebore than rebarrel as the blueing, sights and fitting are all done already.
I believe JES Reboring in OR is doing 9.3s now,  Most reborers are hard to contact, seems that they have a hard time leaving the work to chat, that's not a bad thing if they are working on YOUR barrel.

I looked into it, I just bought a Husqvarna from Simpsons for $325.00, the after market trigger raised the price another $60.00. I like it, a larger bore fairly light stalking rifle, ammo is easy to make from 8x57 cases.
Good bullets from Serbia, 285 gn, Graff and Sons sells bags of 100 for $35.00, I use IMR4895 and Reloader 15.

The 9.3x57 would do everything I need a cartridge to do here in my neck of the woods; I could load it down to 38-55 or on up to 80% of what a 375H&H is.
It would be a sweetie in a classic stalking rifle/stutzen.
But, other than the cool factor my 8x57 will do it all with a 170ish cast @ about 1450, a 150ish jacketed @ 30-30 load level or a full on Norma equiv. load.

  I have a few 9.3's, i also have an 8x57...  I can't think of even one reason to shoot one of my 9.3's at any non dangerous game animal that my 8x57 with 200NP's can't kill just as cleanly, and with less recoil...

I've a swedish model 146 in 9.3x57 and am here to tell you it does indeed have a large and long throat. Using soft cast bullets
my throat slugs out at almost .370 and the bore diameter is .356. Yes,  that's right .356 so the lands are about .005 in height.Basically you can safely launch a 286 grain soft point from 2000 to 2100 fps. My rifle has the fixed rear sight so sometimes with my cranky eyes it is a little hard to get good groups. I plan on finding a good all steel rear sight like a lyman 57 or 48 for this rifle. Frank
