Al Jazeera network

Has anyone here spent anytime watching? I was surprised when a thread on this was started on the Moto Guzzi Forum. Here is a posting from that thread and several other posters chimed in agreeing.

I'll here put my conservative credentials at risk and say that (along with the BBC and the Asian financial news) that Al Jazeera is one of the first places I go for the most accurate and balanced look at the news.

Never thought I'd hear myself saying that; like a lot of Americans, I thought it was the propaganda arm of al Qaeda or Hezbollah or something.   But despite their having a bit of hyperventilation about anything having to do with Israel, they do an excellent job of reporting without showing their arse with blazing, childlike playground bias like Fox or CNN or MSNBC or those other jokes of former news outlets.

Even the Beeb gets silly with articles about "Life in America", which they apparently know very little about, but overall are pretty good.   And the Asian financial outlets do a good job of accuracy, because the dudes that read that are serious, and they won't put up with slanted B.S. if it's going to lose them money.   

I keep an eye on Al Jazeera because you never know; they're like anyone else, you have to look where they get their paycheck.   But I'll believe THEM before I believe the usual USA liars and swindlers ....

I completely agree. Al Jazeera does have generally excellent reporting, except maybe when it comes to Israel, which sometimes gets a bit colorful. I also agree about the US networks. Wall Street Journal is a good reliable source in the US. Otherwise, I first go to British news sites. They are usually well ahead of US sources, and are always, and I do not misuse the word always, more accurate.
 
Now here's the thing that will alarm liberals: Foxnews is generally fair and balanced for news reporting. I'm talking news, not commentators. The scope of Fox news is too narrow, though, to be really useful.  NPR puts a lot of spin on everything, filtering all news through a sieve that puts conservative ideas in a bad light, if it reports them at all.
 
The ones I don't pay any attention to at all are: NBC, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, USA Today. Just not worth the time.

I've not checked them out, but I've heard that Al-Jazeera does good work


I do like NPR; I'm a sustaining contributor. They're a good news source, and I've got an effective filter for sifting through their biases

Regarding NPR, how can you filter their reporting when most of the story is often not even covered by NPR? They use omission as a major technique, especially in political or environmental reporting.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Al Jazeera the one that was reporting that Hussein's army was winning and repelling the West during Operation Desert Storm?  I seem to recall seeing their reporter clammering about Iraq winning, while Fox was showing the cities being overrun by NATO.

I don't see that John necessarily said that was HIS post, though it might be--- rightys think they are conservatives, when they are actually radicals. In other words, other, thinking, people might consider him to BE a conservative. I know I get accused of it sometimes. Al Jazeera is a very reliable source. I also check sites in South Africa and the Czech Republic, as well as (occasionally) Poland and Finland, though the Poles tend to lean too far right, too.  Mostly ABC tends to agree with all of them on international issues.

Another thing about NPR that I failed to mention earlier: I don't see it as a news source, I see it as a propaganda source. Any student of propaganda will do well to read NPR regularly. They use all of the methods, and they do it well. It's manipulation, and the interesting thing about it is that the message goes to people who generally must not mind being manipulated because they would have been exposed for it long ago if that were not the case.


As for those who disagree with Guzzi and me about the quality and reliability of Al Jazeera, you clearly are not reading it regularly. Check it out for a couple of weeks and then tell me it's in some way inferior to the news you regularly read.

I'm serious. It really is a good news source. You're probably confusing them with NBC, ABC, CBS, and NPR. Those are de facto endorsed by the DNC.
 
I haven't watched the network, but I do read the news site regularly.

You'll soon be able to watch their newscasts on Current TV. Al Gore sold it to al Jazeera. (Gotta keep your "Als" straight.)
