The cuts are not reductions in spending at all. If anything they are reductiond in proposed spending. They are reductions in new budget increases. With regard to the military we are pulling out of war zones so the billion + rounds we are shooting a year should drop. if they pay a nickle a round the savings should be substanial.
What to watch is this dog and pony show in a year will surplus in money show up and be diverted to pet projects ?
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Austerity is not the answer.
Sequestration is a man made issue. All (Dems and Adult republicans) except far right agree it's just plain stupid.

And now that we know, and it has been proven by Bob Woodward and admitted by Obama's press secretary that this "stupid idea"  was the president's own and it emanated from the oval office...it must be a bit embarassing, huh?

Of course, they should have been talking and negotiating long before this last day..  but the prez was busy campaigning (for what?), and playing golf .  It seems like the only effort he is really putting out, is his hard work trying to take our guns away from us.

I could debate the Dems are the minority , It's the GOP that are in the majority and set the agenda. a bit embarassing, huh? but that would be bias.

I could argue only the GOP speaker can bring bills to the floor a bit embarassing, huh?. but that would be bias.

I could argue the dems did propose a plan (its on the .gov Website and has been for months) and GOP stated it was dead on arrival a bit embarassing, huh? but that would be bias.

I could argue when sequester was agreed upon it was Boehner who stated on national TV "I got 98% of what I wanted" a bit embarassing, huh? but that would be Bias.

I could argue it's this do nothing congress that vote up or down not the president (who has no vote) a bit embarassing, huh? but that would be bias.

I could argue it was the speaker that declared congressional recess just days before sequestration was to kick in. (by the way they are still in recess) a bit embarassing, huh? but that would be bias.

I could argue all Adults on both sides of the Isle have stated the same as economists sequestration is a stupid idea. It was created to be a stupid idea, So stupid and painful to our economy it would force legislators to come together in a bi-partisan fashion to solve the issues rather than allow sequester to be enacted. Probably the The most embarrassing of all Huh?

If this inept congress can't legislate and earn their pay its time for us to vote 'em all out and start over.

So scooter, you are saying that they should just go ahead and agree to raise taxes, and make everything better. Just where is it gonna end,

raise taxes spend more
raise taxes spend more
raise taxes spend more
raise taxes spend more
raise taxes spend more
raise taxes spend more

Heck have any of you guys been seeing what has been going on for years now!

I know the right people aint gonna suffer from this but maybe just maybe THE PEOPLE will get enough of this and run all of them out.

The republican house proposed two bills to stop this. barry wont even produce a budjet, hasn't in four years. he thinks the "rich" need to get more taxes. Why dont he give some of the millions he's made since he was elected to the government and lead for a change!

I say bring it on let the chips fall where they may!

Well that's one solution but probably not the most effective one.

I would settle for true tax reform , and elimination of bureaucratic waste, programs that are inefficient, subsidies not needed nor warranted, defense cuts (if appropriate) that are actually strategic in nature not arbitrary. and yes taxes on day traders (which are different than investors) who do nothing but increase speculation and hurt the market. Closure of carried interest loopholes. Hold
accountable corporations to ensure their share of tax burden.

I could offer up more suggestions but lets just start there before we need worry about discussing any personal  tax increases and lets just see just how far it leads us. I'm sure others could offer more.

Implementing crap sequester policy to avoid legislative leadership   responsibilities is no way for congress to govern.

JMHO others mileage may vary

I for one and extremely happy that the Fed's spending is being madatorily cut 10% across the board.

Why do those on the Dem's side believe that it is outrageous and impossible for the Fed's to live on the same amount of money that they spent just 4 years ago???

The majority of Congress and the President are "cash junkies" who just can't imagine life without spending more and more and more.

Chung:   When Harry Truman was President, he had two full time aids. They were paid federal salaries.  Somehow, he managed to run the entire country with that bit of helpf, plus a personal secretary..

Today, it is my understanding that every U.S. Senator has 60 full time, federally salaried aids!  Your tax dollars are paying for them.  They spend the vast majority of their time working to get the Senators re-elected.  This is absolute insanity.
Yes, close the federally funded schools.  The U.S. Government did not become actively involved in education until the mid-1960s.  Somehow, prior to that, the county school systems of this country managed to create the best educated middle class of any society in the history of the world.  Our system produced the people who invented and created the largest portion of the scientific developments of the planet over the past 150 years.   China didn't do it.  Russia didn't do it. Europe didn't do it.  WE did it. Everything from the first practical automobile to the Internet.  What is it in your mental make-up that makes you believe that the Federal Government is the answer to everything, instead of the bloated, inefficient, wasteful, insatiable money sucker that it is???

I am more than happy to accept whatever "dire consequences" will come from this cut in the Fed's budget.

Truman ran the country with less than half the current population. The expected level of education was considerably lower before 1960 than it is now. My folks bought their first house in 1968, for $9000--- things have changed. More costs more.

$9,000 in 1968? Where the heck were you living?  I would have to say your exaggerating more than a little bit.  The median price of a home that year was $14,000 - $15,000.

The sequestration cuts, come out to 2 cent on a dollar of the budget.  If the President can't find 2 cents on a dollar to cut, the President should resign, based on his being too dumb to govern.

Even Bob Woodward, the liberal reporter of Watergate fame says that: President Obama is exhibiting a "kind of madness" when he delayed sending a Navy warship to the Persian Gulf because of the "deep" spending cuts set to hit today.

BTW, Today is the first day of the sequestration, in case you haven't noticed "the sky didn't fall Chicken Little". :o

It was a little 2 bedroom 1 bath  house out in the country in west Tennessee. My stepdad was a carpenter and cabinet maker. Over the years he expanded the house, more than doubling the size, but the original sales price (and it was not a new house) was $9000.

Sequestration not a bad thing? Wait and see what the death toll from the flu is next year--- one thing being cut is flu vaccine funding. Do y'all love your babies and elderly family members? You better spend a lot of time with them this summer...

Don't you find fault with a goverment that would cut funding to a service that prevents DEATH, when instead they could find ways to eliminate waste and fraud within their programs? Don't see anything strange about that?

We need to be careful in what we wished for. While I initially thought it was a great idea, now I think the theory that obama WANTED the sequester all along makes sense. Very probable that obama will inflict the cuts in the most painful way possible, as quan stated, and then will blame the republicans all the while, lying through his teeth openly as he did today stating that the "sequester came from John Baynor". Thus he can continue to demonize the repubs for this all the way to the midterm elections. If he takes the house, all is lost. Course it may all be lost before then, guess we'll see soon.  J

Chung,

Re your comments about the military consuming 70% of the budget.  Effective this year massive cuts were already slated for the military.  They are getting the lions share of the cuts under sequestration.

The Federal government will collect more revenue this year than it ever has in history. More than the previous record high of 2007 and the next highest year, last year. And yet the President says we have a revenue problem. How can a sane adult not see the problem. No matter how much we give them, the mentally deficient, morally bankrupt, self serving parasite class of BOTH parties will spend more in their craven efforts at populism. That the Republicans have finally seen signs ofvthe peasants revolting and decided to talk about diminished increases in spending is hardly a positive result. That the President and most of his Party cannot or will not see that this spending is unsustainable, in my opinion, borders on the treasonous because it represents the single greatest threat to our national security. You will have nothing. No meals on wheels. No Medicaid. No Social Security to speak of when the US goes bankrupt and the Dollar is worthless. Under the austerity that will be required then, none of your great social programs will be funded. That you cannot grasp this is incomprehensible.

It is said in places that the cut is actually just 44 Billion which would be just one percent. We need to cut the total spending of government at least 10 percent for 6 years and at the same time pay on our debt. We should start by reducing regulation and taxes to make America a better place for businesses to make money. it is bizarre that the media and many others say the reason China is sucking away our jobs is cheap labor when in reality the tax structure in China is far easier to deal with than in the U.S.. China gives new companies 6 years with zero taxes to start up there. Seems to be working for them. On a minus they have no EPA, an agency I despise but pollution there is incredible.

Interesting information for those who still believe that the "Sequester" wasn't Barry's idea.  The highlights were added by me:

All the President’s unaccountable men
  • By LINDA CHAVEZ

headshotLinda Chavez   When Bob Woodward, one of Washington’s most distinguished journalists, accuses the White House of rewriting history, even liberals should take note. And when the White House responds by threatening him, you’d think the story would become a national scandal.
What makes the story even more important is that it deals with an issue that has dominated the news in recent weeks: the budget cuts that will took effect yesterday.
Woodward has accuses the White House of misrepresenting the president’s role in creating the plan to cut $1.2 trillion from the budget over the next decade.
Woodward: Exposed dishonesty of O’s story on “sequester” cuts. height=300  Woodward: Exposed dishonesty of O’s story on “sequester” cuts.   In his book “The Price of Politics,” Woodward describes in detail how the idea for the sequester came about. As he puts it in the Feb. 22 Washington Post: “The automatic spending cuts were initiated by the White House and were the brainchild of [then-Budget Director Jack] Lew and White House congressional relations chief Rob Nabors — probably the foremost experts on budget issues in the senior ranks of the federal government.”
Woodward not only names the individuals involved, but also gives exact timelines for when the discussions took place and how the final agreement came about.
Woodward’s complaint is not only that the White House is trying to place sole responsibility for coming up with the idea of the automatic cuts on Republicans, but also that it has now demanded that Republicans accept tax hikes as a part of any deal, which was explicitly rejected when the deal was cut.
“So when the president asks that a substitute for the sequester include not just spending cuts but also new revenue, he is moving the goal posts. His call for a balanced approach is reasonable, and he makes a strong case that those in the top income brackets could and should pay more. But that was not the deal he made,” he says.
Before the article went to press, Woodward phoned Gene Sperling, chief economic adviser to the president, to get his version of events. According to Woodward, Sperling yelled at him for most of the call then followed up with an e-mail apologizing for raising his voice but also doing something far worse.
The e-mail, reprinted in Politico this week, shows Sperling threatening Woodward: ‘‘I do truly believe you should rethink your comment about saying . . . that Potus [the president of the United States] asking for revenues is moving the goal post. I know you may not believe this, but as a friend, I think you will regret staking out that claim.”
Such ominous remarks coming from the president’s economic adviser are meant to intimidate.
Reporters need access to pursue stories. And if a top White House official lets it be known that a reporter is persona non grata, the message goes out to others not to talk.
Worse, it is an example of this White House’s imperious style — one that hearkens back to another presidency with which Bob Woodward is all too familiar.
Woodward became a national figure as a young man reporting on the Watergate scandal that led to President Richard M. Nixon’s resignation. His bestselling book, “All the President’s Men,” is a chilling account of what happens when the people surrounding the president decide that protecting their boss is more important than upholding the oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution, which each of them takes.
In the Nixon White House, the corruption emanated from the Oval Office. Woodward isn’t accusing President Obama of directing his men (and they are mostly men) to try to squelch legitimate journalistic inquiry — but if the president is not at fault, he has an obligation to clear the record. And Obama is doing just the opposite.
In the days leading up to the automatic cuts, Obama campaigned against Republicans, laying on their shoulders full blame for failing to reach a deal. But it’s the president who has rewritten the terms of the agreement reached in 2011.

Sperling’s threat against a senior journalist was not made in a vacuum: It is an attempt to cover up the president’s own dissembling. The only cure is for the president to admit his misstatements and hold accountable those who would flaunt their power to keep the truth from emerging.

RPRNY, I sincerely hope you send this as an email, or letter to your Senators and Representative.  It would be a shame to waste this most impressive summation of our predicament.
