Proposed Deer Regs for 2013-2014
« on: February 21, 2013, 04:49:49 AM »
Unfrotunately no changes in the cartridge length.
312 IAC 9-3-2 General Requirements for deer hunting
  • Adds the nonresident youth extra deer bonus antlerless license as a license type for a youth to take deer during the special youth deer season.
  • Makes additional technical changes
312 IAC 9-3-3 Equipment for deer hunting
  • Allows a draw-loc device to be used with archery equipment when crossbows are allowed to be used during the archery season
  • Removes the prohibition on the use of over-and-under combination rifle-shotguns. This prohibition is no longer needed since certain rifle cartridges and shotguns can be used.
  • Specifies the muzzleloaders that can be used during the new proposed primitive muzzleloader season
  • Specifies that crossbows cannot be used in the archery season from Sept. 15 through Sept. 30
312 IAC 9-3-4 Deer Season dates and bag limits
  • Changes the starting date for the archery season to September 15. During the dates of September 15-September 30, crossbows would not be legal to use.
  • Adds a new primitive muzzleloader season that would start the first Monday in January and continue for an additional 6 consecutive days. The bag limit would be combined with the bag limit during the regular muzzleloader season (one deer of either sex).

I wonder what they mean by "primitave muzzleloader" as compared to a "regular muzzleloader"?

My understanding is primitive means rifles of the early 1800's.  Flintlocks, exposed hammers and caps, patched round ball or lead conical (no sabots) and iron sights only.  Not sure about recoil pads or if you can wear gortex.  ::)

Looks like a way for non urban zone hunter to bag another buck. It shows the deer are in addition to your other bag limits. Looks like I'll have to get a flintlock and shop for a hunting frock at this years Feast of the Hunters Moon. I think itis kinda cool.

  (i) The primitive muzzleloader season is from the first Monday in January and continues for an
additional six (6) consecutive days. An individual must not take more than one (1) deer of either

sex under this subsection and subsection 4(f) combined.

As currently proposed, the bag limit for the primitive muzzleloader season is going to be zero if you already tagged one as a muzzleloader tag during the regular muzzleloader season.

Yup, the more I read it that sounds like the case. That kinda killed it for me. I guess that was my wishful thinking. If they would make the bag limit in addtion to the rest it would definitely be an incentive to get out there in January and try this, but I guess not. Oh, well.

Just like the late firearms antlerless season ... more time to put meat in the freezer if you couldn't get it done before.

The two additional proposed seasons will just shorten up my squirrel season and rabbit season since I can't get permission on private land to do either one while deer season is open!
