Powder for 500 SW Handi.
« on: February 24, 2013, 05:15:10 AM »
What powder do you recommend for this rifle.  I am wanting to shoot cast 325-400 gain cast at 1100-1400 FPS.  How many of you use the 50-70 load data?  I want this rifle to be more of a pleasure to shoot than a nightmare.  I remember with the factory Hornady 350Gr bullets I would cringe before pulling the trigger.

A 90-100% load of Trail Boss would likely leave ya smilin'.

I use the lee improved minne bullet at around 350gn sized to .501 over a load of 10.5gn of Trailboss. That is subsonic in my rifle but only just. Pushing it up to 11.5gn should be right about where you want to be.

Do you think it would still be adequate on pigs at 50 yards?

I think 11 - 11.5 grs TB would make good holes in hogs at 50 - 75 yds. With that caliber, you don't need to worry much about alloy and expansion.  A half inch hole is plenty! If you don't like TB then working up from around 8.5 grs Bullseye would be another way to go to get to the same place.
