They were used in Germany after the was. They were not allowed firearms so they developed 50 cal air rifles to hunt with.

There are still people hunting enthusiastically with air guns today, including hogs with a 45 caliber. I read that Napoleon considered air guns to be so deadly as sniper weapons that he would kill people who posessed an air gun.

Awesome story and rifle.
Here's a modern .50 airgun. They're a lotta fun to plink with. This one fires a .495 roundball best. Velocity for. 180grs is about 700fps for 5 shots.

I saw that the other day. Lewis and clark carried them on their trek across the Louisiana purchase, scared hell out of the aboriginal folk they showed it to.
Saw Fred Eichler(sp?) kill a coyote with a 38 caliber air rifle the other day as well.
