First American Slave Owner Was Black(?)
« on: February 24, 2013, 01:52:43 PM »
I've seen this story around the internet and it's spreading.  It's about a black who was the purported founder of perpetual slavery in the 1600's.  Supposedly blacks before that were "indentured" and were freed after a period of time, like this guy.   It's hard to research this issue, but the story is getting distributed.

Any comments?

I've posted a thread about this some time ago. It occured in a Virginia court and is quite an interesting story, very true, as court records will show.

What is the significance of this story now, other than to give white supremacists a warm fuzzy feeling?
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

White supremacists on the US Supreme court in Brown v. Bd of Education (1954) ruled that  it was unequal treatment under the  14th Am. to deny blacks the companionship of intellectually superior white children.   Thereafter,  captive white children were forced, at bayonet and gun point, into racially integrated classrooms.

The whole basis of forced racial integration is the presumed  intellectual superiority of white children and the supposed educational  benefits  that blacks  receive in associating with them.

It shows the importance of JURY NULLIFICATION as we have today.
Also it shows slavery was a greed thing not a white thing.

You don't find any significance in the truth?  Surprising.

I don't get how this relates to jury nullification, but I will agree that "...slavery was a greed thing not a white thing."
Blacks in Africa practiced slavery, and helped supply the slave trade.
Greeks, Romans, American Indians, ancient Jews, Egypt...slavery was pretty common back in the day.

There were a significant number of free blacks in the Confederacy that owned slaves and supported the Confederacy. One in East Texas was so adamant about it he had most of his slaves making pistols for the South to fight the invaders of the North. But as we all know, history is known to change depending on who is in power. Reality and truth doesn't seem to matter when it comes to politics.

The first blacks brought to America landed in Jamestown in 1622 if my memory is right...They were brought in by an English pirate ship who got them from the Spainards...They were bound for the gold mines in South America...

The English had no modern history of slavery but did keep these to work tobacco...Their were about 15 in this shipment...

In the accounts I've read there is no mention as to who took them once in Virginia...

Hey Flinlock
How old are you anyway?
Just kidding.
Do you have any links to that history?
It is pretty interesting.

My roots go back to Jamestown...My ancestors arrived in 1635...We moved down into eastern North Carolina in the early 1700s and I grew up there...

Pick up a copy of Savage Kingdom it's in there...It is about Jamestown from 1607 to 1625 or so...It was written from diaries, legal documents and letters that are in England...The history most of us were taught came from word of mouth and myths handed down through the years...

Yep, the recent book Savage Kingdom is an outstanding historical look at the founding and early years of Jamestown.  It was more like a concentration camp than a colony.   Whites died like flies, in the hundreds, from starvation, disease and overwork, for the first 15 years.

When the first slaves were unloaded at the colony, they were treated as Indentured Servants, because that was the normal framework that the English had in place for feeding/clothing people in exchange for their labor.  Many of the early slaves were released after 7 years, when their term of Indenture expired.    This part of Virginia eventually had the highest concentration of freed blackmen in the colonies.  Many became skilled carpenters, tanners, etc.

It was only years later, that the landowners started to realize that nobody, and I mean nobody, was going to take them to court if they "forgot" to release their "servants"  after seven years.  So, they just continued the "relationship" for the life of the servant.  Eventually, the whole charade of calling these folks "servants" was dropped, and they were just called slaves.

Mannyrock, good post.
The indentured slaves had to be taught a skill/trade and received 50 + acres of land upon being freed.
It is important to know how things like this started not to place blame but to understand history. There is little doubt that slaves were abused but no one ever notes that many people were abused not just slaves .
