Making a .45 LC barrel

I have about given up hope to ever buy a .45lc barrel. Sure I may find one eventually but I am itchin.  What would I have to buy to convert to said caliber?  Anybody have any other suggestions for me? Has anyone bored a 45acp version?  Or is the cost too great for most to attempt this feat?

Good morning!

 YES, there are a couple 45 ACP handis here abouts. ;)

There are three ways to get one; 1) waiting for a factory. 2) a stub as the only other 45 around is .458 and has too long a chamber or 3) a re-bore of a smaller caliber.

There are a number of smiths around that can do it. Personally, I would keep looking I have had three of them, they are out there, just look a bit harder.

There is still a .45LC/.410 barrel listed on the H&R accessory barrel page.  From what I understand from others here it is fully rifled with a screw in choke for the .410 that must be removed for .45LC.  Another thing I was told was this barrel was not strong enough to rechamber to 454 Casull or 460 S&W.

Buy a Classic Carbine, keep the barrel and part out the rest.

Jason, no Ace does have a buff classic tho :). They arent my favorite store, big selection but not always friendly to the customer.

A greenmountian barrel blank can be had for 33.00. Plus shipping. I have purchased several. 45 acp handy is in the safe. 12g stub, lathe turned to fit. heat fitted and pined. total cost, 100.00. 30-30 ejector included. Machinest is a buddy and done at deer camp in his garage. Reamer is at the GBO stable. 45 colt same deal with 454 reamer available. My 45 colt classic carbine has a pitted chamber and 1-1/2" into the bore, i believe cheap material. shoots great. A 41 mag will be completed by 10 march.

Well, because there is no .45 acp barrels either, I'd say you are not in luck there.  It usually requires a stub from another .45 firearm and will run you more than buying a whole carbine.  There have been several sold here recently so, I'd think just keep your eyes peeled.  ;)  Don't be afraid if it's converted to .454 or .460 as most find they still shoot colts fine also.  Your only other real choice is a stub.

45-70 and 45Colt or 45ACP dont run the same dia. bullets (except some 45C and ACP chambered in .451-.452 groove dia barrels). But any larger capacity case can be loaded 'down' to somewhat equivalent ballistics. The 45-70 can be loaded to that of revolver loads fired in a rifle barrel by using 300ish-340gr. bullets and a lesser charge of powder. Yes, the bullets are .457+ dia. and a bit heavier than the typical 45C 255ish, but many guys are firing heavier bullets in their 45cal. guns too. You can even load round balls in those 45-70 cases and sneeze worth of powder for 'gallery' or small game/plinking loads.
At least the 45-70 rifles are readily available, and you have the option of loading them way up too, without rechambering to 454. The owners are mostly well satisfied with them and it is one of the most user friendly calibers to reload for with smokeless (Black Powder is suitable too, but thats another topic).
They come in the Talo shortie, std. H&R 22", the Ultra Hunter at 24" and the BC at 32", various wood and synthetic stocks, so whats not to love?
Oh, and you wont be fumbling with itty bitty cartridges  ;) .

I enjoy my .45 Colt Handi, but not more than a lot of others.  What's your fixation on the .45 Colt.  Do you want to match it to a handgun?  You mention .45ACP, so I guess not.  If you want a pistol caliber carbine that really works, and save a bunch of money, I'd get a .357 and ream it to Maximum.  It shoots a lot cheaper (read more range and hunting time) and you can chop it back as far as 16 inches and it'll still shoot anything you can feed it.

The .45-70 has been mentioned, and you can't beat it.  As my friend George Mann (jeepmann1948) just said a moment ago on the phone, why not the .44 mag.  It'll do all you want, barrels are available plus a wider range of bullets.

Well Pete, I guess the only reason is to match up to my SBlackhawk .45Long.  Just enjoy shooting it and was thinking about getting into reloading a bit.  Thought I would reload 45 and 308. Maybe later get into more calibers.  That is my only reason. I know factory loads, the 44 mag is twice, almost, the boolit that the long colt is but I was cool with it.  Thinking about just getting the accessory barrel from H&R but the combo deal kinda scares me on that barrel.  Should it?

Scares you?  How so?

If your not a loader than I would agree and suggest the 44. But if you are a loader and enjoy building bullets. The old colt is one if the best. It's forgiving and can be loaded mild to wild surpassing the big 44.

The 45-70 is another good one. It's light load is much heavier then the colt and its top loading is on par with some "elephant" loads!!!

It's all what YOU want and need.

For me the 45 Colt started out as a nestalgic caliber. I had family working in Colt forearms and from my earliest age was shooting model P colts. In about 1980 I bought my first '92 Winchester. I desperately wanted a 45 but settled for a 25/20. Quite a step yes but I had my first "cowboy" gun!! A few years later Marlin offered a 1894 in LColt and I had one of them too!  Around the same time, late '80's, I was interested in Silhouette shooting. A good friend shooting a Bhawk w10g of unique would topel a ram where others merely rocked it. The 10" Contender allowed a peek into this rounds potential. What potential it has!!!

I cast my own bullets Keith style hard cast with Lino type and 2400 powder. I quickly discovered what Elmer and Taffin proclaimed this is a real power house!! With these bullets I could shoot right thru 6" hard birch and "iron wood trees!!!  I was hand have been hooked on this grand old caliber ever since.

Without exaggeration I have probably shot more than 50 deer with this caliber. It's a good one, thru the years opened more than a few people's eyes to what this 140 year old can do.

Regarding companion guns for the same cartridge, be advised that due to chamber/barrel size variations not all guns take to the same bullet dia.'s in cast bullets, though most shoot jacketed pretty well. Its all kind of a cat in a bag until you have the guns in hand to check them out. Foe example, my 45C revolver has .454 cyl. throats and a .451+ bore so I need .453-.454 cast bullets to avoid base cutting and tipping of the bullet as it goes into the forcing cone. Do I remember correctly that many of the H&Rs prefer .454 cast also? If so, it would likely work out for me. But if your revolver throats are, say .452 you may not do so well. If all you shoot are jacketed then you would probably be OK, though I find jacketed to be awfully high priced to pitch too many downrange for fun.
That was a long winded way of saying that just because the chamber designation is the same does not mean different guns will shoot ANY load as well as another will and some H&R 45C's have had chamber or barrel issues.

FWIW I just checked 330gr .457" Gould 45-70 bullets in Starline 45 Colt brass for fit in my 45 Colt barrel, they chamber just fine, think I'll be loading a few up with RL7 for fun.  8)

I understand your premise, just for me, I wanted to have two similiar guns if i didn't start reloading. However, I thought pitching more lead out would force me to start and I would start there.

Reloading is a very rewarding, relaxing and can be quite therapeutic! 

If your set on the 45 Colt, I do recomend it!!!

Search and read what you find. Try advanced search so you look only in reloading. Also look at the stickies at the top of the page. Usually FAQ type info is right there for you.

Once you finish then post up looking for advice. As I said the old colt is a popular one with reloaders.

Wow, a 45C chamber that will take .457's; thats a wide chamber! It does prove the point, though, about checking what fits fully fire-formed case mouths. My guess it they shoot quite well, way better than .452 or .454's even would.

+1, but I'm not sure if Matt enabled the search for all members yet, worth a try tho, the google search at the bottom of the main index page works tho. The New to Reloading sticky in the Handloading forum is a good place to start reading without searching.  ;)

Large chambers on the 45LC barrel have been discussed before, but I never checked my first barrel before rechambering it to 460S&W, it will chamber the 45-70 cast bullets also, it shot .452" jacketed just fine as a 45 Colt tho. Using 45-70 cast bullets may be one way to take advantage of the oversize issue.  ;D

When you have had a chance to shoot some of those .457 cast in the 45 Colt Casull Crusher please let us know how it goes. I'm curious how you find they seat and how you avoid leading with the larger boolits in the relatively faster twist of the Colt barrel? This might make an interesting paper patch. Size the .457 down to say .454 and patch with one wrap of #9 onion skin... But how do they seat, that is the question?

It should work fine, 300gr jacketed work fine in em here and Marlin made 1:16" twist 45 Colt 1894s at one time, appears they changed to the dreaded 1:38"(same as 44mag) sometime since tho.  ;) I'll post a range report when I shoot em.
