GC and maxi
« on: February 26, 2013, 03:39:29 AM »
I'm buying a NOE 200gr mold for my maxi's. I'm just getting into casting and know nothing about GC preferences. Is there one check better than another or one to stay away from?

I think Hornady makes them all & other companies market under thier brand.

there are numerous GC makers

From what I have read, most fall within very usable parameters.

the only one's I've heard bad things about, is the Lyman press on ones.

all the crimp on ones work well, if sized to the shank.

Gator Checks seem to be same quality as Hornady, and usually cheaper.

I use Gator.

Check out the Poly for gaschecks too, there is a fair bit of info to read up on regarding them.
IMHO it is of paramount importance to get the bullet dia. correct for your gun's throat FIRST when considering lead bullets; a GC on a too small bullet is still a too small bullet and barrel groove dia. is not necessarily the right size in the chamber throat.

I think you'll find Lyman checks have been made by Hornady for the last few years, do an internet seach on it, I have a box of both in .375", they measure, look and fit identical to me.  Gator Checks are the others that are available, but aren't a retail item, only bought thru group buys, lots of info on Cast Boolits on both topics.

Sounds good, I've sent a pm to the guy that sells gator checks on CB site. I've read a lot happy people with them.

Actually Gator checks are available without a group buy.  You can buy them direct from member Blammer at Cast Boolits.  One bag or fifty or anything in between.

My only advice on checks is don't stock up on 'em until you know they'll fit the bullets that fall out of your mould.  Moulds vary, checks vary and if they aren't close enough they won't function with each other.  I have a Lyman 375449 that will only work with Hornadys.  Everything else will fall of with a harsh look.

And Tim, you've let the air out of my balloon: here I thought you knew every dang thing there was to know!  :) :) :)

Yeahbut, that's not taking into consideration the memory(lack thereof) variable!! :-[ ::) Now that ya mentioned Blammer, the non-group buy options rings a bell.  ;D

I would check with them or someone on Cast Boolits.  My Ranch dog molds require hornadys.  I tried gator checks from Cast Boolits and shot my Chrony with a gas check that came off.  (Actually several times, before I knew what was going on ??? )

Many molds use the Lyman size which I think the Gators are.

Be best to find someone who really knows those molds, I don't.

Glad to tell you what I know (or what I think I know) ;)

Do I remember correctly that a dab of SuperGlue on a bullet base then set it on the check will stop the dreaded fall off?

I'm going to check with the Swede that's making the molds. I like this super glue idea, just when I thought I heard it all. Hehehe 8)

I use the hornady crimp-on gas checks. I feel there the best going. Rick!
