1,000 hp Chevrolet Corvette Stingray in the works  Published February 26, 2013

  Well that was fast.
At least it will be.
Just weeks after its introduction at the Detroit Auto Show, Hennessey Performance has announced plans to boost the power of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to an astounding 1,000 hp.

While the factory Stingray will have a naturally aspirated 450 hp 6.2-liter V8 under the hood when it goes on sale this summer, the Hennessey package adds twin turbochargers, an intercooler, high-flow cylinder heads, a custom cat-back exhaust system and a host of other refinements topped off by a 1 year, 12,000 mile warranty and a set of Hennessey premium floormats.

Try to get your Chevy dealer to throw those in for free.
Hennessey offers a similar upgrade for the existing Corvette, and the price for the modifications on the Stingray is $69,500 on top of the expected $55,000 cost of the car. Althought that might seem like a lot, the current top of the line Corvette ZR1 retails for about $124,000 and has a relatively measly 638 hp.
Hennessey tells FoxNews.com it already has two orders, but for those who can live without four-digit horsepower numbers, it is also offering a lower-priced 800 hp version, as well as 700 hp and 600 hp supercharged packages.

Nice looking car!

Interesting story about Bill Cosby the entertainer: He bought a Shelby Cobra that had about 750 horsepower and he took it back because he was afraid of it, citing too much power for a car that size and the tire technology of the day. Smart man.

I remember the corvettes of the mid-1970s. Let's just say that I doubt any will be considered classics. All looks, no power. Quite a change from the late 60s models. Obviously those days are long gone and the Corvette has a unique position in the motoring world.

We got to see the new Vette back in September. That particualr car was sporting an engine that all GM would state is that it was 640+HP. I've driven Vettes with over 800 HP and this car was close to 800HP and possibly more. So the new engine will take the twist. The biggest issue I see with the Hennessy version- John Hennessy. His reputation for taking the money and leaving you with a parts car is staggering. I have no clue how he stays in business.

I have to agree though not on design.

I had a down payment on a '78 Corvette and saw a used Boss 302 for sale in the paper.
The dealer was good enough to return my down payment and I bought the Mustang instead.

Just as good looking and far, far, far more practical.

I guess it's what floats a particular person's boat. I've never cared for the Mustang or anything Ford for that matter but liked the Corvette. Truth be told I wouldn't want one except as a play car and I can't afford that.

So the taxpayers bailed GM out and this is what they are doing with the money.  I'd rather have a Ford GT for less money.

I like corvettes and mustangs too. Especially red and bright yellow ones. They make great cop magnets, and they draw attention away from me.  ;D

As for GM being bailed out. I think it's a good thing that they have a car like this. It gets people to the dealerships to have a look, and a lot of them end up buying something more family friendly. I'm not joking. Cars like this sell a lot of minivans and economy cars that way. Even VW had a two hundred thousand dollar luxury car that they made for the same purpose.

This model is not coming from taxpayer invested GM. It comes from Hennessy Performance.
In regards to the Corvette II 4 banger, don't count the chickens just yet. There's a V6 Corvette in the works. It will be a base model with about 400HP out of a direct injected 3.6. It will be a low content car with few options.

Not quite the same as an 88hp Mustang II built from leftover Pinto parts

Why not a 4 banger, Indy cars run them and at over 1000 horses they ain't no joke and will turn over 12 to 14,000 Rs a whole lot faster then any V engine.
I still love my Chevy big block RAT motors!!!
A 502 in my 1956 BelAir and a 496 in my Dually.
Although I have to admit that I do miss my old 96 SS Impala with it's little 5.7 350 with only 260 hp but with the gearing would eat 88 mph in second, 135 in third and with 160 on the speedodometer I never found a place where I could open it up past 147 but I can tell you no stock mustang could run with it !!!
That's one reason VA State Police chose them for several years.

I've had three V-8 Mustangs - two 289s and a 5.0 - all of them were fun. If I had the time and cash, though... a truly sweet ride would be a restored 1973 Firebird Trans Am with modern tires, modern 6-spd or even an automatic, and an 7.0 liter LS7 motor - even a 6.0 LS3? - something kinda like this...

It's not a '73, but I'm thinking something like this -

who needs 1000 horsepower?
you can't use that much on a public road.
there's no place you can drive fast enough
to use 1000 horsepower legally.
only professional race drivers should be
allowed to have 1000 horsepower.
they have to be qualified and trained
and licensed to race with 1000 horsepower.
you only need 20 horsepower like a
model t ford has to go anywhere.
what if somebody with evil motives got
ahold of a 1000 horsepower car?
a lot of innocent people could be hurt
in a very short amount of time.

I had a '75 L48 about 10 years ago. It was a lousy car. Seemed like every time I went to get a corvette-specific part for it I was shelling out $1000.

Victor3,

I had a silver 'vette like that too. (gray chevette scooter). A decent car. Bought it for $700, drove it a lot, including with girl friends, and kept it until it fell apart. It made me a fan of hatchbacks and wagons.

Williamlayton, As a 20 year old guy, I can remember very clearly that women wanted to get picked up. Somehow most of them evolved into ladies after about age 25.

You should have kept it. A fully restored Chevette in showroom condition these days would be worth about $700.

Now this was my baby I built right after getting out of high school.
LT1 punched and stroked and still a daily driver on pump gas.
I am building another one just like it only dark brown wher this one was dark green.
Like I said, this one will have a 502 in it with a 4 speed auto with overdrive.

Shaggy:

I tried restoring it, but you wouldn't believe how difficult it is to find parts that are cheaply made enough to replace original parts.

A couple of windows literally fell out of that car. The front passenger seat was non-adjustable. It did have an AM radio!!! I got into a Honda of similar late 70s vintage and it seemed like a luxury car.

Zero to 60 performance was "yes, eventually" But I never was able to measure it because by the time it got there, I had forgotten I was timing something.

The brakes failed catastrophically, like in an Alfred Hitchcock movie, and I couldn't figure out why. I ended up adding some brake fluid and they were OK.

Road noise was LOUD, like being in an small airplane rather than a car.

When it eventually failed, I just left it where it was and I walked away.
