I was talking with my Smith last week about building a 307Win. I know how well the 30-30 barrels are and it sounds like a good choice to play with. Who else has done this and what was the final verdict?

I haven't done it yet. I believe cwlongshot has. I don't know where the .30-30 barrel comes in. If ya want a .307, all it is is a rim cut on a .308. Done properly, you can shoot both .307 and .308. There's no rechamber or rocket science to it.

If it was me, I would get a 308 barrel and cut your rim into it so you can shoot either 308 or 307. But if you really want to make it out of a 30-30 barrel, that is your choice. I have a 30-30 barrel and I am going to make it into a 30-30 AI one of these days.

I agree with the others...use a 308 Win barrel. I have .307 brass if you decide to do the mod. A good smith will want about 5 sized cases to set the headspace.

+1 on the 308 if you have to buy a barrel anyway; you can load it anywhere from 32-20 on up to full house 308 or 307.

Well my mistake here guys. It's not the 307 win I'm thinking about. I kept thinking to myself here why is everyone saying to use the 308 barrel. I checked my Hornady Manuel see the differences, yep I got mixed up somewhere. I can't remember exactly what he was telling me but, it used the same rim size in the chamber as a 30-30. He only compared the ballistics to a 308, or close to it. I was thinking it was. 307 rimmed. I'll try and call him tomorrow and get my facts straight. If I don't write notes I'll forget everything. Sorry for any confusion.

I can't imagine it would be anything else except the 30-40 Krag. Which I have one in the works.

could a guy just get a reamer for say, a brit, cut it off, dull the flutes and bush it with tape to cut the rim?

dulling all but the rim cutter would make it slide in and not cut the tape bush.

You just chuck the barrel in a lathe and cut the rim with a cutting tool, takes about 10 minutes. I have done two. Larry

Yes I have one and its great.

Mine is made from a survivor 308 and Larry made the rim cut so I can still shoot 308's from it.

The 307 IS the same rim diameter as the 30/30 @ .506. The body is larger on the 307/308 compaired to the 30/30.

The 30/40 is another excellent case but much bigger .545 rim. Brass is scarcer and more costly, ballistically its half way between 30/30 & 308/307.

If you have a 30/30, I would recommend the AI as its doable by hand and will approximate the 307 's lo end. Brass will be cheaper, you can still fire reg 30/30 and it will be cheaper all around.

If you have a 308, cut the rim and experiment. Simple extractor mod will allow seamless use of both cases.

Sure would be nice to find an AI reamer up here.... buying new gets VERY Pricey

When you get tired of one of the Maxi's you have.................rechamber it to 356 which is a rimmed 308 necked up to 35 cal. for all practical purposes.

I have one that I did by hand from a 35 rem barrel. I wouldn't attempt a 357 mag/max barrel (to much metal to cut by hand). It's probably my out of the box most accurate handi, save the 45/70 ultra.

Bobby, I didn't realize you did a .356/.358 also. It's a great caliber in a Handi. Mine was done from a .357 on a lathe. I don't know about giving up a Maxi, but I sure would get a .357 barrel to make one. Like yours, mines a shooter too. I was very surprised at how flat it shot for a .35 with a 200 gr. PSP. Mine's cut to 18 inches.
