What's your choice?
« on: February 27, 2013, 03:15:27 PM »
All things considered.. accuracy, killing power, consistency and compatability the most number of guns, which is your favorite .22 LR round?  In other words, if only allowed one round as choice for all uses...which would be your choice?
   I'll start out...see mine below:

 Wolf Match Target.

Shoots as accurately & consistently (or better) as stuff costing twice as much in many of my rifles. Too expensive for plinking and not ideal for hunting, but you did say I could only pick one.

CCI Blazer.  Always been surefire in all the guns I've tried it in, it's inexpensive, and plenty accurate for my purposes.

Now days CCI's Velocitor 40gr HP, Mini-Mag 40gr RN and Stinger 32gr HP get the nod for all uses.

But back before it was discontinued about 15 years ago Federal UM1 was the go to for anything except plinking.  For that their bulk pack was plenty good enough, could approach target grade by sorting it.

You have it in the photo. CCI Mini Mag HP is my hands down choice. Of the ammo I've tested in my many .22LR rifles and handguns it generally is the most accurate. It isn't the cheapest by any means and isn't the only ammo I shoot but if I could always find and afford it then it might would be all I shot.

For hunting and for bigger animals with my 22 rifles, i only use Remington Vipers and that's what i used for this fox,

For trapping and close in fun shooting, i use Aguila Super Colibri's...  Those "Supers" sure are quiet and a LOT of fun!!

Drilling man;
Not to be critical, but you used a Viper on the fox...how comes it's posed with a shotgun?  You ought to give the rifle credit.. ;)
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Actually, you guys have made some interesting choices,,  Lakota talks of the flat nosed CCI  SGBs  (small game bullets), which are effective rounds..but not always easy to find..and a bit more expensive than other solids.  I make my own SGBs with a device I made which is similar to Paco's Accurizer..  http://www.leverguns.com/store/acurizer.htm

Being a blacksmith, i just had to "do it myself"..  I'll show you how I do it..but recomend you get yours from Paco.  I won't take the risk of advising you to copy me.

 1)  I had access to washers at a very low price so I took a stack of them and drilled each through with a 15/64" drill.

  2)  Then I stacked them all on the drill and welded a bead up each side of the stack..drilling one washer of appropriate thickness with a larger hole..to place on the bottom to allow for the cartridge rim.

  3)  Then I prepared a couple rods of proper size..one with a flat face and one with a point

  4) In use, I place a round in the core hole with the larger washer hole encompassing the rim.

  5) With the peining rod, I tap two-three light taps with a rawhide hammer..either flattening a solid point or making or enlarging a hollow point.

  6) For safety's sake use either a thin rubber mat or fresh cardboard under the cartridge head (rim end)

You can see the results  left to right A)  CCI Standard (flat nose)  B) Federal 510 round nose flattened, C) Mini-mag HP opened more, D) Winchester super speed 1330 fps opened more and Winchester solid, flatnosed.
Since these bullets will be slightly compressed, they may not chamber well in a Bentz match chamber, but most have found them to actually improve accuracy in standard chambers..tighter tolerances, I guess..

Caution; for safety's sake..if you do want to accurize your cartridges..get the kit from Paco......

Since I own a bunch of 22LR and I have one, an earlier High Standard Citation that has to shoot standard 22LR ammo so I do not crack the frame with the high velocity stuff, I will have to say i need to only buy the stuff that will work in that one and use it in all the others, but since that is not the reality, I have 5 22LR loads I use.
I use 40 grain hi velocity in the Marlin 918 sighed in at 100 yards
I use CCi mini mags in my Buck Mark II with the red dot
I use CCi tactical, Aguilla SSS, and Aguilla Super velocity in my CZ 452 Varmint.  The sss are for the 25 yard chickens, the tatical rounds are for the 50 and 75 yard Turkeys and pigs and the super velocity are for the rams.  All three rounds are sighted in at he same impact point for the rifle the different speeds work for me on the sillouhettes.
and the rest for plinking are the Rem 36 grain golden bullets for the other 20 22LR guns I have.

My Ruger 10/22 carbine shoot it's best group of 3/8 of inch at 50yds with 10 shots using Federal Premium Game-Shok. I had bought 2 bricks of it because it was the cheapest stuff they had. I had no idea my gun would love it. My Ruger 10/22T likes the Federal but has done it's best with CCI green. My old Ruger carbine is the one that gets the action. The rest get what ever I happen to have in the gun bag. My Ruger Mark III Stainless hunter likes both the Federal Champion and the CCI mini Mags, it does not like the CCI green. The fun part of shooting 22's is finding what it want to shoot that day.

I use CCI Mini Mags in the 10-22s and Marlins. The CZs and Kimber of Oregon Mini use Wolf MT. 2 of my T/C G2s like most anything but my 20" custom shop carbine did very well today with CCI Standard Velocity. It had been a problem prior to lapping the barrel with Butchs' great products.

Federal bulk pak or whatever copper wash that is on sale. I don't rely on .22 for killing power, and failure to go bang is more an inconvenience than anything.

I have never had a finicky gun, the urge to get it out of the stable would likely be greater than the desire to find the one round it would eat.

I like a .22 for practice and fun but honestly never use one for anything serious. I'm just not much on small game hunting these days, never was to be honest, squirrel hunting season always coincided with bowhunting season.
