Well if only landowners should vote then there won't be enough people left eligible to bother holding an election. Only about 1/2 of Americans have their own house and about 30% own it free and clear. That means only 15% would be eligible to vote and the bankers would outnumber them.
No a bank is a company and it would never have a vote.
But anyone holding a morguage would be eligible to vote.
The original intention of the framers was two fold in making land owners voters.
One was they were paying property taxes. We had just severed from England that taxed the colonies heavily and they had no say in what the taxes were to be spent on. This way the ones paying the taxes would ellect the people spending the money and raising taxes.
two, there were afraid of someone stuffing the ballot boxes with Canadians/ English or Spanish comming over the boarder to vote and ellecting people that did not have our colonies/ states best interest at heart.
Seems to me that both fears have been reached. We have people that do not pay net positive taxes voting to take more and more from the ones that do inorder to give it to them selves and we have no clear voter identification with the liberals screaming that we can not have polling places verify the people as to who they are and ballot boxes are being stuffed.
