Someone resurrected an old thread about a 25-06 AI.  That started me thinking...  ::)  Which always gets me in trouble...  :-[  Wait!  let me get off that subject!   :o  I started thinking of my misspent youth and young wimmins!!   :P  And this IS a family forum!!!   :-X
 
Anyway, reading that old thread I started thinking how I always imagined the 264 Hawk would come close to being the perfect long range rifle!  I really like the 6.5 mm's  ;D
 
But then, the 264 Hawk's best velocity with the ubiquitous 140 gr. 6.5mm bullet is only right around factory listed velocities for the 130 gr. 270.
 
So I started thinking about starting with a 30-06 case, moving the shoulder forward about .124 inch and blowing the case out to AI dimensions.  That should squeeze out some more velocity!   :-\
 
The I'd just have to have a Handi 25-06 barrel reamed out to 6.5mm, have a reamer constructed for my new case, have the chamber reamed for the new case dimensions, order a set of custom dies and I'm off to the races!  Shoot man!  I'll bet I could get 3200 fps with a 140 gr bullet!  8)  And I could probably get all that done for under a grand!   ;D
 
'course LoadData says I can get almost 3200 fps outa the 25-06 with a 120 gr. bullet...  :-\
But the 25 cal. is .007 inch smaller in diameter!   :-\
 
Then there's the 270 I mentioned... but that bullet is 10 gr. lighter!   :-\
 
And the 280 can get pretty close to 3K with a 140 gr bullet... the 280AI does even better... but the BC of the 7mm 140 gr. isn't as high!   :-\
 
Heck, according to LoadData you can get 3K fps outa the ol' 30-06 with a 150 gr. bullet... but now you talkin big bores!   :-\
 
Yup, they ain't noooo doubt about it!  A 6.5mm based on a modified 30-06 case has a definite place in any reasonable cartridge lineup!   ;D
 
'course I haven't shot a game animal at over 75 yards in a long time...  :-\  Never did any antelope hunting...  doubt if I'll get to ever hunt Coues deer or Sheep...  :-\

I pushin 3200fps with my 280 Improved-Improved Ultra.  ;)All but one of Berger's 7mm bullets will work in the 1:10" twist, BCs are pretty high. Reamers and dies are available, I already had a 280 Rem die set, so all I did was order an Improved FL die, the 280 seater die works fine.  ;)

I have thought about necking a 222 up to a 40 caliber, then loading it from the muzzle ??? , create a method for securing the cartridge during the hammer strike, make a reduced shank bullet like a 22LR, then make the bullet a REAL like the lee muzzle loaders use, what could be simpler?  8)   

      See what thinking does for you.... I tried it once.....ONCE..... and now I've been married almost 40 years...... just let it go...

I have a friend who does the same.  He actually has limited vision in his bad eye, but wearing a patch makes it easier for him to see out of his good eye.

Hello Richard!!

 While I do not have a handi in 6.5, I do have a Re barreled Mauser in 6.5x63!! I went with a little longer barrel to offset the los in vel be NOT going AI... For me the costs (at the time) associated with the dies kept me with the std chamber.

I have gotten 3400 FPS with a 125 Nosler BT, 3000+fps with a 140 Sierra and 2600fps with a 160RN.



It is a favorite and I built it for long range med sized game rifle.

Ya know, I read these posts last night and again this morning... I guess, if you guys get a kick outa pickin on a poor defenseless old man, then I should be happy I could be a vehicle to bring some joy to your lives...  :-\
 
And I don't want y'all to give a thought to the psychological damage you are doing to the person who is the brunt of your misplaced attempts at humor...  :(
 
Just because he is a sensitive, caring, compassionate individual who only wants to help his fellow man, who's only thought is of others, who willingly sacrafices his own desires to take up the cause of the down trodden, none of this matters.  He gladly takes your taunts.  Don't concern yourselves with the fact that he crys himself to sleep night after night, unable to understand the cruel treatment he receives from those who his only wish for is that they be happy...  :'(
 
Oh!  And I would think twice before I ever came to Jawja if I was y'all!   >:(
