.17 price check?
« on: March 02, 2013, 01:33:09 PM »
Hi all, I do a bit of lurking on the center fire side. I was in a local pawn shop and saw what was labeled a .17hmr sportster with a bull barrel for $139 and I was wondering if it was worth picking up or maybe see if they would go down a bit? Thanks in advance, Zach.

That's a good price, better get back there and grab it, wouldn't hurt to negotiate tho.

I'm not a big 17HMR fan but at that price I'd walk out with it if they don't come down.

I paid $182.00 + tax for my last one....can't find another one in stock.  I'd grab that one.

If you want it GET SOMEONE TO BUY IT FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I made this mistake on a 45LC carbine. Had it for sale for $300 with a redot scope. Went to get it the next morning and it was gone. GRRRRRR! That same visit they had a 22-250 for $335 with a Tasco 6-24 scope. This gun said unfired on the tag. Put it down and went to ask if it was a consignment or the shops. Well I went back to get it after I got my answer. Never made it to the rack. A guy was hauling it to the counter and he then proceeded to buy 4 boxes of ammo with it. SO MAKE A CALL TO A FRIEND IF YOU WANT IT!

Unfortunately buying a firearm for someone else could be considered a straw purchase and is very illegal, I spect that's why gcrank suggested someone you like buy it and sell it to you later.  ;)

I made a mistake of telling a gun store owner I was purchasing a Weatherby 30/378 as a gift.  He would mot sell it to me unless the guy I was gifting it to came in and filled out the paper work.  I went elseware and kept my mouth shut.

Unfortunately all the friends nearby are not exactly gun savvy so that could turn into quite the disaster!

Call 'em up and see if you can put 'lay-a-way' money down over the phone with your card and get to them asap on your return?

Some shops will put a gun away for you. There is a 22-250 at wholesale sports. I didn't have my "cash stash" with me and they would not put it aside with a down payment and hold it until I got back there later in the middle of March. I guess if it was meant to be it will be there next trip to "the city".

Ammo availability was the big attractor to .17hmr since it's the one thing I've seen available anywhere I have been recently (Billings to Minneapolis)

I paid $139 for my last 17HMR at a pawn shop. Good deal. Shoots like a dream. Both of mine do. Just bought 3 boxes of CCI tonight at Walmart for $12.50. There is plenty of 17 and 22 mag on the shelves everywhere here so I figured it would probably be the last caliber the companies begin making so good time to stock up for the summer shooting before it all runs out.

I finally got back home and picked it up for $120. Upon closer inspection it had some rust, scratches, and wear on the bluing but we will see how it shoots. It did come with a Tasco 3-9x40 scope that seems ok.

A short range report: it was shooting a little over an inch at 90 yards but I'm in serious need of some practice. I think She's gonna be a shooter 8) now I just need to clean her up a bit.

Found one today at the LGS for 199.99. Bought it and am waiting for my background check (10 days). Am sure looking forward to shooting it.

  I've had 3 .17 HMRs, including my current one..every one a 'shooter' !

Just picked up the one I bought last week for $200 +40 for two boxes of ammo. Then my son found 400 rounds for about $80. Plan to go to the range tomorrow to see how it does. Will try to post pics after we get home.

Just noticed that just the barrels on e-bay are significantly higher priced than what I paid at the LGS. As a first, I found nine rounds wrapped in a couple of patches in the forearm.
