ammo question
« on: March 03, 2013, 02:52:10 AM »
Hi, I'm going to South Africa in October for a plains game hunt (first time). I'm wondering if anyone could give recomendations on what factory ammo to bring for my .308? I would really like exact brand. weight and bullet recomendations. all shots should be 200yds or less and I don't reload.

Thank you!
Mike

You could use pretty much anything for the Blesbok, Impala and Warthog.  The Wildebeest and Gemsbok will be more of a challenge.  For the latter two with a 308 Winchester my bullet weight pick would be no less than 165 grains and I'd prefer 180 grains or heavier.  Something loaded with a Barnes bullet would be good.  I'm sorry I don't have more specific recommendations but I haven't shot a factory loaded 308 cartridge in years.  Obviously, you also need to get ammunition that shoots well in your gun.

I'm surprised to see Warthog in the "pretty much anything" category.  My experience is pretty limited - only one animal - but it was 200 grain, 300 Mag, and it lodged in the far side shoulder, only about 50 yards.  Again, just my experience, but I believe most African PHs like to see weight, even at the expense of velocity.  My PH's entire battery was 308, 458 WM and 12 ga.

Thanks for the input so far. I've been using Federal premium trophy bonded  165gr for white tails and hogs; but thata isn't much to compare to with African critters. The bullets kill deer real good, and I head shoot hogs so I don't have an idea how the bullets work on a little tougher animal.

Your Federal Premium ammunition should do just fine.  A Warthog isn't any tougher than U.S.A. hogs of equal size.
