Sight Hood for this?
« on: March 03, 2013, 05:43:37 AM »
Does FA make a sight hood for this particular front sight? Would really like to have one. One reason is for the sight picture and the other is to protect the sight itself.

Thanks...........

I have the patridge front sight blade. They're no longer available, officially, through FA

Pretty sure they were used on the 353s and similar models that were silhouette oriented. I used to have a 10" 252, now sold, that had the comp rear and hooded front sight.
That front sight hood accommodated a much smaller front sight post.

I'm certain that hood would not fit your patridge, esp as your sight height looks like a .480 --which is typical 6". Just too tall

Of course you could always get the hooded site from FA,  but that kinda goes without saying I guess

I was afraid my front sight would be too tall for the hood. The sight pictured is on a 10" 44 Magnum manufactured in 1990, so says FA. I bought it used at a great price.

So far I have been careful not to ding up the sight and I guess I will continue to do so.

If I was to elect to get the hooded front sight, are the hoods plastic or metal?

A craftsman could make up one of some tubing that slides over the barrel/sight and a latch; there were such things in the past for target rifles. The basic version was the Springfield '03 sight hood if you want to search pics online for an idea of what I mean.

The one I have replaces the original front sight. It is covered and uses an adjustable post. It is on a M83 44m.  Perhaps Ken Light may help. See www.ihmsa.org  and ask on the forum.  rp

The FA hoods are a matte black metal, probably aluminum.
Before FA offered the current adjustable front sight, they made two severely undercut ones like the one pictured. One was intended for use with a hood. That one had a notch cut at the bottom rear of the sight. When the sight was tightened it held the hood in place.
I can't see such a notch just above the sight base in your picture.
The sight hoods won't work with a holster.
