Seems they want larger caliber weapons in Tennessee , at least in Knoxville.

The old 45 is hard to beat, but it sounds like a bunch of hooey to me.  Why not issue Colts that were designed to shoot the 45 ACP that have an unquestionable reputation?  I've become rather fond of the .40 S&W in my Glock 22, Gen 4.  The Glock is so easy to repair and to modify, who needs a warranty?  Why switch to a Sig?

The Sig was designed to shoot 45 too, only it was the first handgun that was able to shoot a staggerd mag of hollow points and FMJ, something the 1911 could not do until reciently.
But is sounds like the police department just wants to spend tax dollars.  Where are the used guns and mags going?
I queston the need to go from 40 to 45.  Ballistic twins, more ammo in the 40 on a similar sized gun and the 45 is always a little larger.  The Sig P220 being the smallest of the grips of all the 45 acps making them more friendly to smaller hands and ladies.  But that was the whole reason the FBI went from the 10mm to the 40 was the people wit smaller hands could not hold onto the 10mm.

I question any advantage gained from going to a 15rd capacity .40 to an 8rd .45. Not to mention the DA/SA trigger system over the consistent system of the Glock. The Sigs are reliable, well engineered guns, but IMO offer no advantage over the Glocks.  The service life numbers quoted, I have no idea where those came from! Oh well, at least the troops got new service pistols.

I'm not sure I understand the change myself. Maybe a deal for the chief . I know I'm a cynical old fart.
Besides, is it me or are they paying premium prices. I can get any glock I need for under 600.00. Would think Leo would get a discount. Haven't priced the sig 45 though.

I'm sure the taxpayers will be thrilled to hear it.
Seriously I could possibly see the change from the 9mm. but not from the .40

I Have a buddy that thinks if it is more expansive it has to be better.  You may have someone on the purchasing staff that sees the glock at $500 a gun vs the Sig at $900 and the sig has to be better.
He can also be like me and can not shoot a glock because of the grip angle.  I can not roll my wrists that way and I feel like I am aiming at the floor.

My State Police agency, from which I am now greatfully retired< went from Glock 17s(with a bunch of AD's and lawsuits) to the Sig P220 45, which we all loved and No ADs, back to a Glock 22(becuase our cop/military groupy political suck-up administrator, who BTW held Glock stock, said our Agts 'needed' more bullets. Thankfully, due our efforts in training/range time/tactical/Simunitions drills, the ADs didn't come back like the G17 era. As one of the Fire Arms staff I worked hard on that and got a policy approved to allow Agts to carry 1911s plus other approved weapons with standards higher than issue weapons. Reason for 9mm rejection-shootout with 2 Agts & Deputy VS 1 bad guy-19! 9mm hits with Fed 147 Hydra-Shok-0 stops/1 G21 45 w/ WW Black Talon from deputy+suspect down.

Shouldn't we pass a law that any ellected officals or hired officals that are in the spending of pyublic funds have all of their investments placed in a blind trust, so they do not know what stocks they own and will not spend public tax dollars on things to enrich themselves?

Seems there is a controversy looming..... I thought there was something fishy about the switch. KDP is claiming Glocks fail. http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2013/mar/03/documents-reveal-more-about-kpd-switch-in/

Notice Glock is a little surprised.........me too!

Some of the considerations for the switch might have been:
the age of the current pistols, as long as we are replacing...
what caliber do we want? Can we do a test with demo models?
Are there different grip configurations, short frames, single stack magazines, holster model styles, to accommodate more officers;women, off duty and plainclothes concealment.
With the .45 different types and protection levels of bullet resistant vests can be considered.
The .40 is much more penetrative than the .45 in the case of gun-grab use of his/her pistol against the officer.

Lots of considerations.....

By the way, Glocks don't fail.

See thats my point, according to Knoxville PD,  they do.  I am thinking there is something amiss here.

I thought police liked the glock with the striker action so that the donut crumbs do not get in the gun where the donut parts and the french fries can get inbetween the hammer the the firing pin.   ;)

This whole thing has been a mystery to me. Glocks Fail!

Mebbe, they found a way to get that white powdered sugar in em and is causing failures, I Dunno.

The chief said the switch was a sound financial decision because the life of a Glock was four years, while the Sig Sauer was good for 10 years. Although the Sig Sauer gun cost nearly twice as much as the Glock version, Rausch said the transition was a wise move.
City documents, however, indicate other factors were at work — reasons Rausch did not address at that news conference.
A letter from the city to Glock states that triggers were freezing on the guns after they were given to officers and lock pins that hold the 34 parts of the gun together were failing.

I still think "someone" may be getting an "incentive" here.

"Glocks fail." That make as much sense as making it hard for law abiding citizens to buy guns will make school children safer. Hogwash.

The doughnut crumb test was an important factor. ::)
