Grandson found an old BP Toy Cannon. Any Help IDing it?
« on: March 06, 2013, 12:29:25 PM »
Were were just south of Hannibal, MO and my grandson found this old toy barrel detecting near the river.
About 2 1/2 LB and 9" long with a 1/2" bore.

Anyone have an idea to it's age?

Thanks for any replies.

Coconuts,

It's a cast iron, black powder salute gun form the late 1800's or first part of the 1900's. Many of these small bore salute guns were made for kids at that time. Speaking personally, I would never fire it.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't have any cracks and I was going to try and shoot it....but I will take your advise and just build a carriage for it. My grandson can display it with his other finds.

Cast  Iron  Cannons are brittle and should not be shot.
