« on: March 06, 2013, 04:08:39 PM »
Can someone tell me about this "30-30 Basic 3 1/4 " cartridge. Not much on google. Today is the first time I ever heard of such a round.

I believe you are referring to 30 basic 3-1/4 which is a straight wall brass.  It's like a full length 45-120 length only in .30 caliber.  It has no shoulder, so isn't really a 30-30, but the full length pencil sized brass.  I believe there is a slight taper to it though.

Basic brass if full length brass that an entire family of cartridges can be made of, it comes in lots of different forms, 30 Basic is just one of them, there's also 405 Basic and 45 Basic, and another for rimless  in the form of .30-06 cylinder basic.

When will they make some 35cal basic brass with a rim? Think of the possibilities. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

"Like a .357 super duper Maxi...   ;D"

I have the same question about the .38-55.  Would a longer case match .358 performance with a larger bullet? ???

Why'd they stop at Maxi case length...anyone know?.  I have read that the .45-90 was the most efficient of the .45-70 family.  If that is true, perhaps the same applies to the .357 and .38s. ??? ??? ???

I have a 45-90 sitting on the bench, place a 45-70 next to it and the bullet of the 90 basically sits at the top of the mouth of the 70, so the 90 is a 'full case o' powder' type of thing.
If you work out the proportions of dia/case capacity/bullet weight, etc using that as a guide you can maybe calc that out and create the '380 Uper'?
Mostly though, I think that the advent of the more powerful smokeless powder and the move to 'small bore' calibers did it in. The old timers held onto theirs but the young turks took up the 30cal.'s and if they needed more beans, maybe went straight to the 45-70. The schuetzen target shooters moved from the 45-70 to 38-55 to 32-40, etc. because they could shoot good scores longer with smaller calibers.

Perhaps because it was a revolver round.  ;)

Stevens (100yrs' ago and more) had long, pencil like cartridges that worked well with black powder, I suspect not so well with smokeless. Anyway, they are long gone but if you have a Cartridges of the World reference they would be fun to look up. BTW, there was a cartridge back then that the 357 Max basically emulates too. Maybe that size, revolver cyl. length aside, is what gets the 'bang for the buck' with modern propellants?

Some of those are listed in the COTW link I posted, you can scroll that page.

Tim

Read my first reply and look at the 38-55 in the link I posted, its parent case is the 38-50 Ballard Everlasting. Here's a copy of the COTW with some of the old 38-?? rounds, they list a 38-35 Stevens Everlasting in which a couple 41 Colt rounds can be fired, but they're smaller diameter rounds also.

I cannot remember the names, But back 100 years or so Australia had ''Kangaroo rifles'' chambered in long tapered cases simular to the 32-40 only longer, in many different calibers.

I have a couple in my collection.

Exactly! I would like to call it a 357 ultra max. Making some 357 Basic brass 1.8+" would be a great start. ;)

Thanks, Dinny
