Bent receiver AR15 - getting front pivot pin out
« on: March 07, 2013, 04:59:48 AM »
OK, I got took at Houston Gunshow. My Bad! Bought an AR-15 lower receiver from an Individual and it is slightly twisted. Just enough I cannot get the front pivot pin to slide out like it should (or at all for that matter).

Police Armorer used a punch, tried to gently pry/lever, called it some pretty bad names, then smacked the snot out of it but to no avail. Handing it back to me he said, "Huh? Looks like its buggered."

We mikked it and it is slightly, very, very slightly twisted. While a magazine will insert his plastic frame bnlock thingee won't. He didn't want to make matetrs worse so he suggested I try the Internet for advice.

Anybody got a suggestion for how to get the front pivot pin to move?

PLS! I got $475 in this thing and would hate to lose it.

It may be that the buy is your tuition... If the gun pivots I would drill out the pivot pin. Done correctly nothing will be damaged except the pin..cheap tuition. Perhaps when seperated the twist can be altered?? and pivot pins are cheap. Let us know how this works out..

Don't know about you but I would take it back asap. Dealer may or may not be aware of the tweaked nature of the lower or then again he might. Once you drill out the pin I'm guessing all bets are off. Just my take. Frank

Tuition, huh?  Sorta like WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF USED AR-15's - SUCKA!

Gunsmith69 - I was thinking I'd cut the pin with a dremel then try to replace with a pin I might have to polish down a mite. Is that what you are suggesting? Wouldn't think it would be that difficult.

Frank46 - I bought from an Individual. He's probably still chuckling about unloading that Lower for $475.

Yep must be getting old as I probably didn't read your post correctly. Anyway since you have so much money in the lower go ahead and look up the specs and see what the hole was supposed to be and get it reamed out correctly. Sorry you got taken. Frank

A suggestion also would be if you aren't planning on changing the uppers once you get it built. If you can't get the twist out of it or the holes are off center as long as everything else works ok you might bore them out a little larger inline and them do the same to your upper to make it fit.

Of course if your planning on changing it out this isn't really feasible.

Good advise on hole adjustments.

I figure I can get a machinist o make me something that'll work for an oversized pin if too bad.

If the detent pin is boogered I might be replacing it too.

Ahh, I been suckered before. Probably will be again. Makes the horsetrading more fun even if I won't do it to someone else.

Thanks guys.

UPDATE on Bent AR 15 Receiver.

Got a magazine/lower reciver block as suggested. WORKED LIKE A CHARM.

Inserted the block and used a punch to drift foward receiver pin out.

The forward pin still requires a solid whack but will move to allow the installation of an upper end. Appears to be tight (no noticeable gaps between receiver halves. Need install barrel and good to go!

THANKS GUYS !!!!
