22-243 Just starting--need help
« on: March 08, 2013, 02:37:19 PM »
Hi--New here.
I bought a Turk Mauser with a 22-250 barrel on it.  It had lots of problems, the worst of which was a chamber so oversized that it made cases impossible to reuse.  My gunsmith suggested taking it out to 22-243, which I had him do.
I have everything I need to make ammo except for the Redding dies which are coming from Graf's in their own due time . . . (impatient).  This makes the 12th centerfire cartridge I am set up to reload, so I don't need help there, but the only thing I load that resembles a wildcat is my 338-06, and it is actually a commercial load, just barely.  I think it was Weatherby that legitimized it.  You can buy ammo for it if you can afford it, but I fireform 30-06 cases for a lot less money.
I hope to hear from other 22-243 shooters regarding info sources, pet loads (my gun has a slow 1/14 twist and a 22 inch barrel).
Planned use for this gun is varmint hunting and a little paper punching.  I plan to load it to near maximums, understanding that the barrel won't have a long life (though it may outlive me).

My barrel wasn't a candidate for the CHeetah since it has a 1/14 twist.  Was trying to do this cheap, and I don't think my Smith has a CHeetah reamer either.
Here's some stuff on the CHeetah:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_CHeetah   (Where I learned that it's properly spellled "CHeetah")
I like the idea of shooting heavier bullets at very high velocities, but my current barrel won't handle them.

it would be better to use 308 cases to make your brass less trimming. ;)

I'd love to have a 25-243. I really like the quarter bore. But it's hard to justify with all the factory rounds available.  ;D the 250 savage is sweet too. I never bought cases for mine but just necked up 22-250 cases for it.

The 25-243 would probably be the same as the 25 Super, same case. it would do about the same as the 257 Robert's.

That's the thought that came to mind when I read that recomendation too, Lloyd. I usually prefer to neck up rather than down for that reason.  ;)

Do a search on the 243 Middlestead for lots of info that may help you.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus
