« on: March 08, 2013, 06:36:48 PM »
Hello,
Can anyone recommend a good subterranean termite treatment for around the home's foundation?
Thank you in advance! :D

Bought some stuff at the ace hardware the other day in a " peroxide" type bottle (16oz)with a red label and a yellow ring that says fire ants and termites. Wasn't cheap. But did a number on some fire ant mounds. It has some directions for subterranean use but I don't have the paper handy. If it works on termites like it works on fire ants it may be worth the money.  Active ingredient is Permethrin 25.6%

There were larger and smaller bottles.

Now this is Texas, don't know if its available where you are. It's made in Baton Rouge, La. By Louisiana chemical USA LLC

Do you apply the same product to kill termites as you would to prevent termites?  Just curious.  My inspector never sprays, just inspects.  Years ago they sprayed every year and you could tell when they had been by the smell (and the bill).

I'd guess that subterranean termites will be deterred and killed,  the poison will last longer underground than on the surface I' d expect.  My wag would be that as long as the juice lasted they would stay away and when you see activity juice em again I' sure the paper work would say but it escapes me at the moment. It definitely a fire ant killer.

My BIL when he was alive had a WDI license in Texas and I helped him numerous times to treat for termites. If you have them and know that you have them, just applying a treatment around the foundation will not get rid of them. Probabilities are high that they are coming into the house via a plumbing penetration like a shower pan or at a tub or sink drain. You'll need to cut open the drywall and treat these areas as well. If you watch how much you cut the drywall and where, you can use a 8x16" screened vent to cover the hole. If the area needs to be retreated, the screen vent makes it real easy to access. The chemicals used by the pros are not available to you as an individual. He used a product called Dragnet Termiticide. For the areas inside the house he used a product called Timbor. Make sure whatever you use, if spraying inside, that the product is rated for interior use. A lot of these chemicals are real nasty so make sure to use full clothing while applying.

Subterranean Termites must return to the ground every 24 hours. That's where you treat creating a deadly barrier between the house and the ground. There are Formosan Termites that do not need to return to the ground and these require the house to be fumigated- not a fun thing. The Formosan are the worse termites to get rid of.

In Texas you must have a WDI license to buy the chemicals BIL used. I have found several of the professional termiticides at country feed stores available to ranchers. No license required and I've never been asked for proof of owning a ranch- just give me the money. Dragnet costs BIL about $140.00 a gallon which makes 100 gallons of chemical. That will treat an average size home of about 1800 sq ft single story, no basement. Research and Google are yer friend. Know before you start on a project like this as these chemicals can be dangerous.

I am licensed in TX also, and I agree with Larry.  I recommend a professional.  Termites can be stubborn. BTW, I only inspect for termites, I don't treat them, that can be a very tedious process.

Thank you all for the information. It is greatly appreciated! Does anyone know what the active ingredient in the "professional use only" termitecide is?

Dragnet is a Permethrin 36.8%, CAS 54645-53-1. Timbor is Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate 98%. I would expect most are of the Permethrin type of different concentrations.
As I remember  in Texas you cannot just go out and treat a home unless actual termites are found. The chemicals are considered ground pollution and a lot of our water here comes from under ground reservoirs. So all any pro can do is inspect for active swarms and if he finds none, can charge you for the inspection only. Warranty renewals in my book for the termite treatment is a scam. You pay hundreds of dollars for a guy to come and check his own work- not a real smart thing. Get a different applicator to inspect if you just have the need.
