Reduced loads for 30-06

Hi All,


Looking for a load for my Ruger 77,  I have a supply of 170gr hornady 30-30 bullets and would like a load at around 2250 fps. Not much in the loading books.

Try the Lyman manuels, the cast bullet manuel has many reduced loadings. (lead)  The std manual (currently #49) has redused loadings ofr most popular bullet weights.

If you have IMR 4895 or 3031 on hand, both of these powders load down very well.  Just use .30-30 data to start with and don't use fillers.  I've been loading my '06 practice loads to .300 Savage levels with 4895 to ease the abuse on my shoulder.  I find them more pleasant shoot and the print only a little lower than point of aim.

This was discussed a couple months ago.  I'm planning on the working this up over the summer.  Take note of the discussion of not fully fire forming the brass and number of firings.  I'm going to use H4895 since I already have it on the self.

I'm not convinced about that forming the case and head separation stuff.  I've been making reduced cast bullet loads for years and I've never seen it. 

I have seen that kind of case problem with 1 fired brass shot in a machine gun.  The cases are crammed in with such force the shoulder is pushed back then the firing pin pushes the case forward then fires.  The case stretches to fill the gap like on a rifle with too much head space.  I could see this with any reloads where the shoulder pushed back to far...

 Hodgdon's 60% rule with H4895 will do what you are looking for. That leaves a wide range to adjust your load.

I have used SR4759 in 30-06 reduced velocity loads, they work well.

IMR 4198 worked really well for me when I tried the 180gr and 200gr reduced loads from speer 14 manual. It may be an option for the 170gr.
