45 Long Colt carbine for deer?
« on: March 10, 2013, 08:16:27 AM »
Thinking of getting one of these carbines for deer hunting here in Vermont. Does anyone have experience with these carbines or this caliber? Are they an adequete deer round with factory loads? Optimum range? any info on these guns or calibers appreciated.

Many folks here have had success with them.  I think they are a good 100yd shooter.

Did not we just have such a post? (Search 30-30 vs 45 Colt)

Hello,
YES, I have been using one on and off for over 25 years. With in its range limitations its a excellent deer caliber, that really excells in thick, close range conditions, you are likely to find thru much of Vermont. You will be looking for a '06 in you like sitting fields. ;)

Factory loads limit range a bit more, but with ''Ruger level'' hand loads and a good bullet, your good for at least a 150 yard deer.

A factory loaded 45 Colt will be ok but a hand loaded round brought up to a Ruger/TC level is much better. Like CW said, check out the recent post about 30-30 vs 45 Colt.

Since you specified factory rounds, I stay with my 100 yd effective range.

If only using factory rounds, I would look at Buffalo Bore, Grizzly or Cor-Bon ammo. I started out using Cor-bon's 360gr (now discontinued) cast load and their 225gr Barnes XPB load. Both shot well in my stock 45LC barrel, but now that it has been throated for heavier bullets the heavy cast bullets shoot better than any jacketed bullets I have tried.

Thanks, Dinny

What a sensational Buck :o   That guy visits me every night in my dreams for about six month before deer season......and never...ever.... shows up when I need him :'(   I'm glad you got him...maybe he won't bother me this summer ::)

Going back to the .45LC, I haven't used mine for deer yet.  The problem is too many rifles and too few tags.  It's in line with a bunch of other Handis.  This thread prompts me to take it out to one of my woods stands this Fall.  I have no doubt about its ability to put down a big buck at reasonable yardage.  It goes back to jeepmann1948 current signature line:

"it ain't what you shoot em with......................
it's where you hit em "

The man knows what he's talking about.  I killed my first deer rabbit hunting with a .22.  I walked up to about 50 feet on a big doe grazing in a logging road intersection.  I dropped to my knee, clicked off the safety, her head popped up looking the wrong way and I put it behind her ear.  I'm not saying this is right, ethical or legal, but it's what I did when I was a kid.

The bottom line is, loaded properly and used within its capabilities the  .45 Colt will do it.  I have no questions there.  Go with it and have fun.

Thanks to all for the congrats. I, if nothing, am an honest man. It would kill me if I thought I was deceiving you'all.  This was my brothers kill last year. They had been going fer him for a couple of years.  Both of my brothers have taken more than one massive deer!  I spend twice the time as them in the woods and they have reaped while I have been skunked a few times.  It thrills me so to see them get one of these bad boys though.  Maybe, the Lord knows it thrills me more for them than they would be for me.  I don't know.  Love the times w/ Dad and the family in the woods and by the trucks.
Thanks, Jer

would you say, that within 100-125 yds, it is easily as effective as a 45/70, with say, 300gr bullets?

If comparing my hand loaded 300g 45 Long Colts (chronographed @1600+) to the factory 300g 45-70 (Advertised 1800fps)is a GOOD COMPARISON, YES.

WE know this my friend  ;) ... I did not want to seem to ''boastful''  :o :) and have the post turn like the 45 LC vs 30-30 seems to have. I know you reached nearly 2K with a 250 in a Long Colt. (As have I) and 300s NOT allot behind. ;)

Judishious loading my friend. ;)  Lever guns (Paco Kelly) has some of these loads as does John Taffin.  I can scan and sent to any who would like them.

Set me up then friend. I will fire them down the line with my Super!  Not really!  Well, I might.  It handles the 1300 fps well.

Well I did have a hat and vest on when I shot him, but they were orange.  lol

My goto load in the .45 Colt is 300 gr. XTP Magnum over Reloader7 Rifle powder.  Here's an interesting article on this caliber and some of John's insight.  The load I use is listed about 3/4 down the page.  These aren't leverguns, but can actually take more pressure typically into the Ruger #1 low range...

Per that same article, I use 16.5gr of 2400 with a CP 335gr lead WFN. Accuracy from my Handi usually runs 1-1/2" at 100yds with 1400fps 10ft from the muzzle.
