What level of accuracy to expect

Last year, my father gave me his 1981 production Ruger Standard Model. She has a 4 3/4 inch barrel and good quality fixed sights. Her trigger is quite nice, breaking at about 2 3/4 pounds, but having a decent amount of creep.
  I make no claims about being a handgun shot, but from a rest at 10 yards this pistol will put a mag full of CCI standard velocity long rifles into an inch. At 25 yards she's right about 2 inches. Of course offhand is much larger. I'm thinking of a Volquartsen trigger with pre and overtravel adjustment. Granted I'm newish to handguns and I expect that I'll do better with more practice, but I'm wondering what to expect of this fine  pistol in terms of accuracy.

I have the MK I target that I got new in 78.  I have never seen any after market parts that I thought could improve it for me.  I don't shoot competitions but has always been my most accurate pistol. All my children learned to shoot with it and wonder why they can't find a new .22 that is as accurate.  It has taken numerous small game and varmints out to 50 yards.

After some 40yrs. of being around handguns and the shooters of them I can honestly say I seen a plethora of shooters who thought the next new gizmo was going to improve their scores.
Most didnt.
You are much better served to spend the money on good ammo the gun shoots well and PRACTICE. There is no substitute for practice. And its FUN; what could be better than that!? ;D

 For what it's worth, I grew up shooting a MKI with that bbl length about once a month and I became very good with it. You can change out the trigger but with that barrel I don't believe you'll be able to improve your groups significantly. You're doing pretty good as it is.


 In 1984 I bought a MKII with 10" bull barrel. That was quite an improvement over the short bbl model. I've had more expensive 22 pistols (including the S&W mod 41 in my avatar) but even with the stock trigger the Ruger remains my most accurate handgun.
