Browning 44 mag
« on: March 11, 2013, 04:28:00 PM »
I made some bullets last week.  Here's how they shoot.  If you go with a Rossi 92, you should be equally happy because I believe the twist and specs are similar, but have no way to verify.

Study after study has shown how dangerous distracted driving is yet people continue to talk on their cell phones while driving. Driving in the U.S. requires your full attention. Many states and countries have made it illegal to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and the federal government should follow their lead. Banning the use of cell phones while driving would have the added benefit of making the no-texting law enforceable.

My Henry Big Boy .44 mag is one of my favorite rifles... from TB reduced loads through H110 hot loads it cycles smoothly and hits where I point it... and does this while feeling great in carry position or at my shoulder... I am ultra confident in its performance... so much so that I got it a little brother, Big Boy .357 mag.

Henry sounds good.  I like the scope mounted option.  What kind of rifling does it have?

Whenever someone asks about rifling, I know that they have read the Marlin "Micro-Groove" horsepucky... Standard button cut rifling has worked for a long, long time... and when buying a gun, rifling type should be the least of your concerns, twist is far more important IMO... The Henry Big Boy .44 has a right hand 38 twist... the quality and more importantly smoothness of the action has to be seen and felt to be believed... and I also own old Marln's and Pre-64 Win 94's...  here is a link to Henry;

Do you shoot any groups at 100 yards?  How does the big boy do?

I have shot 2 or 3 hundred groups... the gun shoots way better than me... but I can do 2 MOA with the Skinner sights off bags. I am sure the gun can do MOA... it is very accurate with my H110/240 hard cast SWC loads.

I've learned to get used to the 1/38 twist.  I have a 300 grain mold that is supposed to be great for microgroove barrels but it won't stabilize.  Ken Waters didn't like it.  For me it seems to be good, but it just takes more work.  At 50 yards the 300 will give a group, but at 100 yards it will fly off the paper.  With the higher velocity of the rifle, though, the effect of a lighter bullet relative to the heavy is inconsequencial.

The M92 Browning.Miroku .44's have a 1:38" twist; all Rossi M92's have a 1:30" twist.

Pretty slow twist.  Interesting they would change it.  For what reason?  Keep it authenic?

38 twist is the standard, works great with hard cast, gas checked or not... Rossi probably sped it up for the newer FTX bullets... alot of guys are shooting them in their lever guns.

I'll bet there is nobody at Rossi who knows what an FTX bullet is.
